NLDS: Cardinals 6, Padres 2
Bottom 3rd: Astacio allows a leadoff walk to Abraham Nuñez followed up by a Khalil Greene error allowing Yadier Molina to get aboard. Mulder bunts the pair over, and Eckstein gets aboard on a fielder's choice that blows up on 1B Nady when he throws home but Hernandez can't make the tag. A walk to Jim Edmonds gets followed by an RBI walk to Pujols. Astacio manages to strike out Larry Walker on five pitches, and then strikes out Reggie Sanders on four. St. Louis scores without getting a hit. 2-0 Cardinals.
Bottom 4th: With men on second and third following an Abraham Nuñez ground rule double, Yadier Molina reaches on a fielder's choice grounder that eats up Nady, whose momentary hesitation in throwing home costs the Pads a run. After striking out Mulder, David Eckstein (who else?) lays down a perfect bunt for a suicide squeeze. Jim Edmonds bounces out to Mark Loretta to end the inning. 4-0 Cardinals.
Top 5th: For the second time in two innings, Mulder has rebounded from the line drive to get a double play, this time an inning ender off the bat of Eric Young. 4-0 Cardinals.
Top 6th: Make that three double plays. Mulder's cruising; what a way to come back.
Top 7th: Greene doubles and Joe Randa singles to center, with Greene holding at third, nobody out. Nady singles to left to drive one in, and Mulder still hasn't gotten anybody out -- but wait! Miguel Olivo, pinch-hitting, kills the rally by bouncing to second for the fourth GIDP of the day, Randa making it to third on the play. Mulder plunks pinch hitter Damien Jackson, which brings out Tony LaRussa to pull Mark Mulder. What a courageous game he's pitched.
Bottom 7th: With men on the corner, Reggie Sanders blasts a ringing double off Rudy Seanez past Joe Randa, clearing the bases, Sanders taking third on the throw. 6-1 Cardinals, the game now well beyond the Padres, despite outhitting the Cards!
Top 8th: With the bases loaded and two outs, Julian Tavarez plunks Xavier Nady, the second time in the game he's been hit. LaRussa goes to the bullpen and gets Randy Flores to replace Tavarez with Mark Sweeney at the plate. Flores strikes out Sweeney on five, vaporizing the Padres threat. 6-2 Cardinals.
Top 9th: Isringhausen cruises through Dave Roberts, Ryan Klesko, and Mark Loretta, Loretta popping up weakly to David Eckstein to end the game. What a disappointment for the Pads, who threatened numerous times, but could never get the runner over. Final Score: Cardinals 6, Padres 2, with the Cards up 2-0 in the series.
