Pickoff Moves
Jaffe On The Dodgers
Jay Jaffe takes on the question of the hour for the Dodgers, namely whether Jim Tracy should continue as manager. Taking same path Paul Scott did in the damn near defunct Fourth Outfielder, Jaffe figures Choi would be worth about "15-20 runs", or a game or two, roughly the same as Scott's earlier estimate. That doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're busy blaming everyone but yourself -- more specifically, when you're blaming your GM for your team's failures -- it just amplifies the obtuseness.UTK Quickies
From yesterday's UTK:- Jake Peavy will miss his usual start, instead getting bullpen work to align him for the postseason.
- Turns out Mariners outfielder Jeremy Reed has been playing with a torn wrist ligament most of the season. "The injury isn’t serious in the long term, so Reed should be able to re-establish himself as a promising young player next season. More disturbing here is another case of a player in Seattle playing injured and doing more damage, both to himself and the franchise, due to someone’s decision."
- Will says Eric Chavez's shoulder surgery is "not a terribly serious surgery so my guess is that, if this is what Chavez is having, he’ll be back by spring training with a slight downgrade to his throwing arm from third."
Roster Notes
- Barry Bonds is done for 2005, or so says Felipe Alou. Barry's expected to be back next year.
- The Cubs have snagged their first free agent by locking up Ryan Dempster for $15.5M/3 years.
Brewers Get 81 Wins
... thereby guaranteeing them a non-losing season. It ain't the playoffs, but it's something.I'll Second That
Chisox GM Kenny Williams, proving he needs some help with his double negatives:"I made the statement: `Without a World Series title coming to Chicago and the South Side, it'll be considered a failed effort," Williams recalled. "It's great that we're at stage one, but unless we don't finish it out, personally, it'll only mean a job unfinished and an opportunity lost.Sure, Kenny. And the Angels will be happy to help with that don't finishing out thing. What's a season without failure?
Comments:
Look for Hendry to move early this offseason. He has said his biggest regret was not trading Sosa earlier (last offseason). What I hear in that statement is, "We're gonna be agressive in the offseason."
Okay, the word verification is easy, it's on the same page you make the inital comment on. Cool.
