Races
- AL East: With yesterday's 5-3 loss and today's 8-4 victory over the Red Sox, the Yankees will be the AL East champions for the eighth season in a row. (The Yankees have a better regular season record against the Red Sox, 10-8.)
- AL Wildcard: Back to back losses -- 3-2 yesterday and 4-3 today -- have pushed Cleveland to within a game of elimination. Their only hope for contention is for the Red Sox to lose tomorrow, with a one game playoff on Monday. The Yankees may rest their regular starter Mike Mussina, which could give the Sox an edge; if they win, they have the playoff berth.
- NL Wildcard: The Astros lost yesterday 4-3 to the Cubs, while Philadelphia beat the Nationals by the same score, shrinking the NL Wildcard lead to one game. As I write this, Houston leads the Cubs 1-0 and Philly leads the Nats 4-1.
