Minor League Scorebook
Oh, my goodness gracious me, after a brief drought, there's a
bunch o' news to go through, so let's get busy:
- Joel Guzman hit his first home run for the Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League.
- Very late news, but Alberto Callaspo went 3-5 with a pair of homers for Anzoategui in the Venezuelan Winter League. He was 9-24 with three homers in that league.
- Howie Kendrick has updated his journal.
- Topps has announced Players of the Year for the minors; Brandon Wood took the prize in the California League.
- Baseball America published their draft scorecard for both the Dodgers and Angels. Tommy Mendoza of the Angels earned Best Pro Debut, and Trevor Bell got Best Fastball, with a 95 MPH heater, but the bad news is that the Angels failed to sign 6 of their first 14 picks. For the Dodgers, Best Pro Debut went to LHP Brent Leach, who led the Pioneer League with a 2.43 ERA. Since "it appears unlikely" the Dodgers will sign Luke Hochevar, the Dodgers "hope that getting players such as [3B Josh] Bell, [RHP Steve] Johnson and [OF Scott] Van Slyke in later rounds will help lessen the sting."
- Here's a little MILB.com story on Matt Kemp and the competition between him and Andy LaRoche that kept fueling his competitive fires:
"I fed off LaRoche," said Kemp, who had 18 homers and 75 RBIs the previous season while splitting time between Columbus of the South Atlantic League and Vero Beach. "I played with him in low A, high A, all over. I just fed off him and he fed off me. If he hit a homer, I felt I had to hit a homer. He was more known than I was, but I never felt that I was in his shadow.
