Pickoff Moves, Bedtime Edition
When Less Means Moore
So now the Dodgers are supposed to talk to Atlanta AGM Dayton Moore about their open GM position. There's at least 28 teams with an AGM (we know the Dodgers have already spoken with Kim Ng, and the Red Sox don't have one). At the rate of one per week, that would take us into ... June. A steady ratcheting down of expectations, from winning the NLDS to just staying competitive to winning more than 71 games -- and now to simply fielding a 25-man roster.Dodgers At Cashman
From the story above, the Dodgers will play exhibition games at Cashman Field again in 2006, for the first time since 2003, hosting the Mariners on March 30. Perhaps Adrian Beltre can pretend he's a Dodger again, and perhaps Derek Lowe can throw him a low, outside slider to remind him of the good old days.Roster Moves
- U.S.S. Mariner reports that the M's are close to a deal for 29-year-old Japanese catcher Kenji Jojima.
- Javier Vazquez has demanded a trade from the Diamondbacks to an east coast team, presumably not the Yankees.
- Can-You-Believe-This Dep't: Brett Boone says he now has the fire. At 36, it's probably just heartburn.
- Despite earlier reports, Paul Konerko has not received any offers from either the Angels or White Sox.
- Not a move, but a roster note, anyway: Maicer Izturis is playing in the Dominican Winter Leagues, and homered in his first game.
- Omar Minaya of the Mets will meet with Bengie Molina at his Arizona home this weekend to discuss a deal.
Minor League Notes
In the absence of a Minor League Scorebook (reminder: no AFL games today, tomorrow's the finals), a couple bullets about the minors:- Jim Callis has his best guesstimates at Baseball America as to the top 20 prospects currently in the minors who will be contributors by 2007. The Angels and Dodgers, not surprisingly, have a bunch on the list:
2. Brandon Wood, ss, Angels
Forcing his way atop Los Angeles' collection of shortstop prospects
7. Chad Billingsley, rhp, Dodgers
Has better chance to get 2006 look after Paul DePodesta's firing
8. Joel Guzman, of, Dodgers
Keeps reminding scouts of Juan Gonzalez, could be on trading block
10. Howie Kendrick, 2b, Angels
Pitchers still haven't figured out a way to get him out
12. Jered Weaver, rhp, Angels
He's good but he's not Mark Prior, and watch that G/F ratio
20. Kendry Morales, 1b, Angels
Hopefully for him, Los Angeles' fascination with Darin Erstad will have ended - I missed this dodgers.com story about Matt Kemp's success in the AFL; he batted .383 on the season.
