Pickoff Moves, Bedtime Edition

Experience Keeps A Deer School, But Fools Will Learn In None Other

Seriously: Rob Deer is the Padres minor league hitting coach?

Roster Notes

Olympic Qualifiers: USA 6, Mexico 5

A close one for Team USA, starter Jered Weaver struck out the first six batters he faced. In the third with two outs, Weaver gave up two runs on a walk, a triple, a single, and a double before retiring Francisco Mendez to end the inning. Weaver only posted four innings before getting yanked. Former Angel Steve Andrade got the win with a single out in the ninth. Howie Kendrick went 1-4, and Brandon Wood went 0-4 with three strikeouts. Ouch. Braves prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia won the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Brandon Wood Does Not Use Steroids, Honest

You hit that many dingers, and people notice. Lo: see the article saying Wood doesn't fit the stereotype of a bulked-up 'roid user:
"He's tall and skinny, not very big and I can beat him in arm wrestling," Team USA second baseman Howie Kendrick said. "People wonder where his power comes from, but he knows how to release the head of the bat, and hits to all fields with power."
The only thing missing from the article is an announcement the team's checking his blood on a daily basis for stanozolol...

Update: Brandon made MiLB.com offensive player of the year. As if there were another choice...

Comments:
Deer has been a minor league hitting instructor in the Padres organization for several years.

Although I hated the deal at the time, Roberts wasn't a mistake. He hit pretty well, and two of the three guys that went to Boston in the deal (Jay Payton, Ramon Vazquez) were out of their organizaton before the season was done. The one thing Roberts couldn't do was play a good center field, which is necessary in Petco Park. Cameron can do that, ergo he is coming to the Padres.

Blum is returning to San Diego because he lives in San Clemente and his wife had triplets during the season. I'd call that clutch. ;-)

The problem I have with Roberts is the problem I have with Cameron: both are likely to miss a lot of time on the DL. Cameron was able to play a good CF, but I think those days are over, and Towers just bought a ghost.

Gotta like the 6 Ks. Don't gotta like the 1-5 G/F. Ugh.

I keep hearing that about Cameron, but last year's freak accident aside, he'd played in 140+ games a year each of the previous 7 seasons. It's not as though he has perpetually bad hammies.

Eh, maybe. Old guys who get injured tend to stay injured. Heck, young guys who get injured tend to stay that way, too (Troy Glaus, anyone?).

Yeah, if he keeps running into other outfielders at full speed, the Padres are totally hosed.

Wow! I thought I was the only guy that had triplets this season....

Well, I can say from experience that Mrs. Blum will need his help.

Good luck to the Blum family.

Yeah, I remember listening to a June radio interview between him and Luis Gonzales of the Snakes, whose wife also gave birth to triplets. It was interesting to say the least.
