Pickoff Moves

Jered Weaver To Start For Team USA In Wednesday Qualifier

Jered Weaver will make Wednesday's start in the Team USA Olympics qualifier, against Mexico.

Mirabile Dictu: Epstein Visits Dodgers

Theo Epstein will apparently meet with the Dodgers, according to Tony Jackson in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. But even that much isn't a lock:
The McCourts are believed to have offered the position to Epstein, along with a small ownership stake in the club, but the entire process appears to be held up by Epstein's desire to see what materializes with the pending sale of the Washington Nationals before making a decision.
In other words, Epstein either (a) desires to stay on the east coast, (b) thinks the Nationals ownership situation would be better than working for the messy McCourts, or (c) both. And why shouldn't he be concerned?
"Frank doesn't think that way," one source with Dodgers ties said. "He has given orders to Kim and Roy to move forward and negotiate. Under that concept, he isn't worried about putting a team together. In his mind right now, this GM job is first and foremost a statement of his ownership, which is why he wants to put a star in that position.

"This is more about show than substance, although granted, Theo would be a great addition."

So, the reason McCourt isn't concerned is because he's acting GM, in addition to all the other hats he's wearing! It certainly confirms my fears that the McCourts are more interested in style than substance.

Warped Wood

Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild says it would be "stupid" to assume starter Kerry Wood will be healthy by spring training.
"I think, as an organization, we look at it that if Kerry comes back, when he comes back, it's going to be a bonus," Rothschild said. "We have to plan that he's not going to be back at any certain level we can predict.
Cubs pitching looks less and less impressive every year. Whether that directly stems from Dusty Baker abusing his pitchers, I can't say, but I bet it's part of the problem.

Cubs Interested In Bradley, Acquire Juan Pierre?

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have talked to the Dodgers about acquiring Milton Bradley. And in Chicago, ESPN radio reports that the Cubs have made a deal for Juan Pierre with the Marlins, for a pair of unspecified prospects.

Comments:
The McCourt quote really is just about the saddest thing a Dodger fan could hear. The owner cares more about PR than winning.
