YES! Konerko Re-Ups With Chicago
Update: Look, Ken, while I'm sure getting Manny is high on your list of great things for the Angels, if it means gutting the farm to get him, I can be perfectly happy with an infield of McPherson and Kotchman at the corners.
I have to wonder whether this was Arte intentionally trying to drive up the price of free agents. The Angels already had a premium 1B prospect in Kotchman, and another one stacked up behind him in the minors in Kendry Morales. Konerko just didn't make the slightest amount of sense. The Angels are short on holes in the outfield, so Manny Ramirez doesn't make sense either... if you think about it, with the Angels' farm system in its current shape, they could be one of the few healthy franchises in a few years.
If the Angels do nothing but re-sign Byrd (and even that looks iffy), how can they hope to make it to the WS?
12 mil a year for Konerko? If Arte was going to spend that on him, Man-Rams not out of reach.
I think they should take the hit -- if it comes -- next year when McPherson and Kotchman are adjusting to playing in the majors full time. I don't necessarily think Kotchman is a middle-of-the-order; even in his prime years, Mark Grace was hitting second or third most of the time. It's high time to start seeing some of these kids come up and play. I'm absolutely with Anon in the third comment -- next year may be rough, but Kotchman is going to be a heck of a lot better than Konerko in a couple years.
Brian -- you and me both, brother.
Personally, I think this is better anyway. And, won't we by 2007 see G.A. at first base anyway?
i always wondered why they didn't play quinlan regularly. i bet he can out-hit GA, erstad, or finley, given a chance.
Then, Stoneman needs to go down to the Wells Fargo and take out a 12 month CD on 25 million dollars. Upon expiration, he should take it out and buy himself some free agents next year. Andruw Jones anyone???
