YES! Konerko Re-Ups With Chicago

As reported on at ESPN and MLB.com, Paul Konerko has re-signed with the White Sox, for $60M and five years. Thank God.

Update: Look, Ken, while I'm sure getting Manny is high on your list of great things for the Angels, if it means gutting the farm to get him, I can be perfectly happy with an infield of McPherson and Kotchman at the corners.

I have to wonder whether this was Arte intentionally trying to drive up the price of free agents. The Angels already had a premium 1B prospect in Kotchman, and another one stacked up behind him in the minors in Kendry Morales. Konerko just didn't make the slightest amount of sense. The Angels are short on holes in the outfield, so Manny Ramirez doesn't make sense either... if you think about it, with the Angels' farm system in its current shape, they could be one of the few healthy franchises in a few years.

Comments:
.. or the devil. But what do you think the Angels should do? Do you really think Kotchman can be a middle of the order hitter in his first year in the bigs?

If the Angels do nothing but re-sign Byrd (and even that looks iffy), how can they hope to make it to the WS?

... i meant 'first full year' ...

Next year may be rough, but this (not signing him) might look a lot better in 2 years.

12 mil a year for Konerko? If Arte was going to spend that on him, Man-Rams not out of reach.

let's hope the Plan B Kotchman-for-Sweeney deal is also wrong. Three years for Manny would be the best fit if we don't give up too much for him.

I think they should take the hit -- if it comes -- next year when McPherson and Kotchman are adjusting to playing in the majors full time. I don't necessarily think Kotchman is a middle-of-the-order; even in his prime years, Mark Grace was hitting second or third most of the time. It's high time to start seeing some of these kids come up and play. I'm absolutely with Anon in the third comment -- next year may be rough, but Kotchman is going to be a heck of a lot better than Konerko in a couple years.

Brian -- you and me both, brother.

Re: Kotchman for Sweeney.

Personally, I think this is better anyway. And, won't we by 2007 see G.A. at first base anyway?

yeah, i guess you're right. it's more fun to see the home-grown products, anyway.

i always wondered why they didn't play quinlan regularly. i bet he can out-hit GA, erstad, or finley, given a chance.

what a freaken relief... i was going to throw tomatoes at Brilliant Bill if he went thru with this. Probably just driving up price, why not drive up the price on your biggest AL rival from last season? :/

Halleluja!!! (sp?) The BEST news I've heard today!! I'm believe that, due to the obscene cost of players this year, that we bring up the kids and let them play. Bring up Mathis to catch, McPherson gets his shot, Kotchman gets his and bring up Kendrick. He is already Kennedy's equal offensively.

Then, Stoneman needs to go down to the Wells Fargo and take out a 12 month CD on 25 million dollars. Upon expiration, he should take it out and buy himself some free agents next year. Andruw Jones anyone???

Where will the Angels and Dodgers look next for offense?
