Angels Acquire J.C. Romero, DFA Josh Paul

The Angels acquired reliever J.C. Romero from the Twins for SS Alexi Casilla. (Also at MLB.com.) To make room, the Angels designated reserve catcher Josh Paul for assignment.
"When you feel disrespected, and feel you can't do anything about it, that's when you get frustrated," Romero said in a teleconference. "You have to move on. If you don't move on, you're going to be a mediocre pitcher and a mediocre person."
Romero had control problems last year -- oh, who am I kidding, every year -- leading to a 3.47 ERA and a 39/48 K/BB ratio. The Angels' pen will no doubt be one of the scarier ones we've seen. I don't mind the trade so much as the inability to get something approximating a good reliever. As for Casilla, he's a young player -- 21 -- and has surprisingly good plate discipline (29/31 BB/K ratio).

Update: Pearly Gates points out that the guy is a halfway decent LOOGY, with a .198/.308/.267 line against last season, and that playing half his games in the Twinkiedome, to boot. Maybe a better acquisition than I thought.

Comments:
Good pickup. It didn't cost us anything, either. Although Casilla was OK at the lower levels, he's no Wood or Aybar.

Here's how the top left-handed hitters in our division have done against him:
Chavez 5 for 20, no home runs
Ibanez 2 for 14, no home runs
Blalock 1 for 9, one home run

Reading the thread at John Sickels' site, it would appear alot of Twins fans are happy J.C. is GONE. The consensus appears to be had trouble with inherited runners and was a genuinely bad dude, unpopular with Gardenhire and his teammates.

I'm surprised the Angels couldn't get something for Paul. Decent backup catchers aren't always easy to find.

the press accounts indciate Romero was frustrated that Gardenhire didn't allow him to develop a niche, using him sometimes as a long reliever, sometimes as a setup guy, and sometimes as a LOGGY ... i assume the angels will use him as a LOGGY, the only roll he seems well-suited for

Romero is a LOOGY, not a LOGGY. Erstad is the team's LOGGY (Low Offense, Gold Glove Yokel)

LOL!

Now THAT is good!

Funny the Angels DFA's Paul a year after seeing fit to keep him on the 40-man roster rather than Bobby Jenks and Derek Turnbow.
