Angels Trade Josh Paul To Devil Rays

Thus permanently ending the reign of the man the Rev. knows as Pope Josh Paul, the Angels have traded their former third-string catcher to Tampa Bay, according to ESPN. The Devil Rays returned minor league infielder Travis Schlichting.

Comments:
Does this mean Scoscia is going to have to somehow get by with only two catchers, Mathis and J. Molina, or does it mean Stoneman is now in the market for a new third string signal caller?

Perhaps they sign Piazza as the DH/3rd string catcher.

Would Piazza be a good option at DH considering the decline in his OPS or would the team be better off w/ some combination of Juan Rivera, Casey Kotchman, or the injured veteran of the moment? I would lean toward the latter . . . .

Piazza shouldn't be catching anymore; the need for a third guy vanished along with Bengie Molina. If they needed one, why not keep Paul, who's shown he knows how to keep his seat on the bench warm, and how to collect a major league paycheck?

Plus they have that Neopolitan guy in the minors in case they need another catcher. He's supposed to be a servicable backup...

Right. Mike Napoli. Hits for power, draws walks, but strikes out alot and hits for a low average. Below average defensively, I've read.

There are a couple of interesting articles about the Angels at minorleaguebaseball.com. One is a year-end look at the Angels' minor league system, the other a story about Angel scout Eddie Bane's trip to Indianapolis to brainstorm w/ Colts' g.m. Bill Polian.

Thanks for that, I've run it upstairs.
