Byrd Signs With Indians

Paul Byrd signed a two-year, $14.25M deal with Cleveland, according to ESPN and MLB.com. The contract has an option for 2008 that could make the deal worth $22 million.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Indians are now front-runners to acquire former Padres closer Trevor Hoffman.

Comments:
Now did the Angels offer Byrd arbitration so they can get a 1st round draft pick from the Indians?

probably not stoneman is tight with his money byrd was a journeyman pitcher and when it comes to giving him big bucks stoneman just goes after another journeyman pitcher somebody they can use as a fourth starter gives the angels 6-7 inninnings and turn it over to the pen. that byrd byrd was a croed pleaser doesn't mean that much to stoneman

The arbitration deadline is December 7th. So, even if the Angels haven't offered it yet, they still have until the 7th. And since there is no way that Byrd can legally accept it, it's literally a zero-risk proposition. I'm sure he will be offered arbitration now.

Byrd is a "Type B" free agent, as is Washburn. Bengie is a "Type A." I'm not sure what the compensation is for Type B players.

I don't know ... $7M is what journeyman pitchers get these days. Doesn't seem like a bad contract to me, but then I'm not a GM.

At least, the Angels get the draft pick. Funny Cleveland wouldn't ask him to wait a couple of days hoping the Angels wouldn't offer arbitration.

Type A's get the other team's 1st round pick plus a supplemental "sandwich" pick between the 1st/2nd rounds. Type's B's get the other team's 1st round pick but NO supplemental pick. There's more to it than that, but that's the basic idea...

What happens if a team's first-round pick is already taken due to another free agent signing?
