Hector Carrasco To The Halos?
MLB.com reports that former Nationals reliever Hector Carrasco may be heading to the Angels on a two-year, $6M contract.
According to a baseball source, Carrasco, 36, is set to sign with a West Coast team. The Angels, Mariners and Giants are vying for his services. According to the source, Carrasco is expected to get a two-year deal worth $6 million and may get another $1 million per season in incentives. The Nationals were not willing to give Carrasco that kind of money because of Carrasco's age and their limited budget, which is expected to be determined at the end of this week.Carrasco had a 2.04 ERA in Washington (caveats about oversized fences apply) in 88.1 IP this year."My gut is he is going to sign with the Angels," said the source. "If the Angels signed him, [the Nationals] will get their first-round pick, which would give them three picks in the first round. That's pretty significant."
Comments:
What would be the point of getting a guy who has had two significantly better than average seasons as a reliever (according to ERA+), separated by 10 years for $3 million/year PLUS a 1st round draft pick? Why is any team willing to put up that much for him?
Carrasco should pitch closer to last year's number than the previous seasons. He learned a new pitch last year, which helped account for his success. If his arm holds up, there's no reason he can't hold on to the success.
But still.... a 2 or 3 year deal for that much money? Ouch.

If this guy is brought into the fold I will lose the little remaining faith I have in Bill Stoneman. Paying for middling relievers (Yan, Carrasco) is beyond stupid. Is it as dumb as signing Gordon or Farnsworth? No way, but still very stupid.
I say he just give the friggin' ball to Derrick Turnbow or Bobby Jenks, they could.......wha?....they were released last year? Nevermind.
