Roster Notes
- I guess the Yankees really do make Tom Gordon sick, 'cause he's signed an $18M/3-year deal with the Phillies. By the way, guys, Gordon's gonna be 38 next year. You knew that, right?
- Tim Worrell accepted a $4M/2-year deal with the Giants.
- The Rangers and Yankees are tussling over overrated Kyle Farnsworth, who's expected to get a $17-$19M contract.
Update 12/2: Farnsworth has signed with the Yanks for 3 years/$17M. This should be interesting....
Comments:
Farnsworth can be dominant, and he really appeared to turn the corner last year with the Braves. His arm is "worth" more than Gordon's, but then there's the matter of that ten-cent head.
i'm puzzled by the Mets catcher situation. reportedly, they've given offers to Bengie and Hernandez and said the first one who accepts, gets it. but that was a week ago, and niether has accpeted. hmmmm. and i like the idea of offering Bengie arbitration, then giving him a 2-year deal.
the other thing i think is odd is the quiet behavior of the Yanks this year -good for them - they're being quite reasonable.

Bengie gets arbitration no matter what because of the draft picks involved, especially if yesterday's rumor about Hector Carrasco is correct.
A team should never give relievers, that much money with the exception of closers. A team should grow their bullpen and pay them jack, instead of paying guys 6 million a year to pitch 60 innings a year. Thats a million every 10 innings. Not too mention, the statline a reliever puts up in one is much less dependable then a starter or position player in reflection of their true skill because their statistics for that year are in much smaller sample sizes.
Brian -- I fail to see how signing Kyle Farnsworth to a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract works out to "reasonable" by any conceivable definition of the word.
As to the Mets' catching situation, I couldn't believe it when I read that, because I get the impression they just shot themselves in the foot when they pulled that maneuver.
