Roster Notes
- Contradicting earlier reports that had the former Red Sox player signed by the Dodgers, the Pirates have upped their offer to Bill Mueller to three years, according to the Times. The Dodgers may be forced to follow suit if they want to acquire the free agent.
- The Pirates are interested in trading for Milton Bradley, and could dangle relievers Mike Gonzalez and John Grabow.
- The Dodgers and Padres have given J.T. Snow contract offers.
- The Dodgers are considering an offer to Johnny Damon.
- The Red Sox have offered a straight up trade of Manny Ramirez for Miguel Tejada.
- The Padres acquired catcher Pete LaForest from the Devil Rays, off waivers.
- The Padres sold reliever Chris Oxspring to the Hanshin Tigers.
- Scott McLain, whom my wife and I got to see in spring training a couple years ago in a Cubs uniform, was signed to a minor league contract by the A's.
- Sidney Ponson is in talks with the Rangers.
- The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox is one of the team Darin Erstad has on his four-team no-trade list this year.
- Kevin Towers said that Dave Roberts will be the team's starting left fielder and the team's leadoff hitter. The Pads are also thinking about having Josh Barfield and Bobby Hill competing for the starting second base job in spring training.
- Update: The Dodgers are intensifying their pursuit of Johnny Damon, according to the Boston Globe, though they have yet to make an offer. Damon allegedly wants a seven year deal.
Comments:
Erstad probably chose the Red Sox as one of the four teams because he knew that was the highest probability of a trade. It's not so much that he doesn't want to play in Boston, he's just rather stay in Anaheim. Not only can Erstad block the trade, but he could extort even more money out of the Angels/Red Sox by "agreeing" to a deal if it becomes financially attractive enough.
Three years for Bill Mueller? An offer to J.T. freaking Snow?!? How many overpaid infielders does one team need? Though Colletti hasn't yet indicated his 1B plans, it becomes increasingly apparent with each passing day that Hee Seop Choi has played his last game as a Dodger.
Obtaining a quality young reliever (Gonzalez) in exchange for Bradley might ease the pain of such developments.
Wait, no it wouldn't.

I agree that JT Snow and Mueller don't bring much to the table, but even overpaying for Damon might be interesting. He is getting old and he is somewhat injury prone (though he has that gamer play through injury tag) but they aren't many OF prospects on the farm and he isn't that toothless of a hitter (800+ OPS even after tanking starting in August). He would be a nice compliment to Drew and likely more than make up for losing Bradley. That said, not 7 years.
Getting JT Snow is like paying to have less production. Bill Mueller at least hits for average, unless Ned thinks it is 2004 (what an abberation that was for Snow) I don't see how you pick up a player with a .365 SLG.
