Sickels Ranks Angels Top 15 Prospects
Probably the last column John Sickels will do for FutureAngels is up, his list of the top 15 prospects in the Angels system. Here's the list for posterity, since the site is probably going down after January 1:
Name Position Grade Brandon Wood SS A Howie Kendrick 2B A- Kendry Morales 1B B+ Jered Weaver RHP B+ Erick Aybar SS B+ Jeff Mathis C B Thomas Mendoza RHP B Steven Shell RHP B- Nick Adenhart RHP B- Alberto Callaspo 2B B- Trevor Bell RHP B- Michael Collins C B- Mike Napoli C C+ Sean Rodriguez SS C+ Joe Saunders LHP C+Sickels says he gives out no more than 4-5 A grades per year, and that an A- grade represents "a huge complement".
Comments:
Tony Reagins, director of player development for the Angels, has said that they will keep Wood at SS until he proves he can't play the position.
Steve Smith, proprietor of futureangels.com, has advocated converting Aybar to a centerfielder, believing that he has all of the tools to be a good one.
in the o.c. register today bill stoneman expresses his preference for signing free agents as opposed to giving up prospects in trades . . . prefers developing from within and retaining young players . . . let's hope he adheres to that philosophy and doesn't ship out any of our blue-chippers (e.g., kotchman for sweeney)
... which is why I think the "Angels are going after Konerko" and all associated free agent rumors are garbage.
To expand on Matt's comments:
At what level does Kendrick start the year? Sending him back to AA seems a bit silly, but if he's on Salt Lake's roster, where and how often does he play? It could be argued that Wood, with his AFL experience (and very brief late season call-up), could skip to AAA, too. These are decisions that need to made real, real soon...a good problem to have, though. (same thing goes for Mathis and Napoli if, for some reason, Mathis isn't in Anaheim)
I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this matter.
