Speaking Of Baseball Books...

In my professional career, I've found plenty of reason to use the O'Reilly-published books; usually they're very well-written tomes on computer-related (and typically, Linux-related) subjects. Now comes the news that they've got a volume on baseball statistics coming up, called Baseball Hacks: Tips & Tools for Analyzing and Winning with Statistics. Due out in February, it shows you
all the baseball-related stuff that [databases such as Retrosheet] can do for free (or close to free). Just as open source projects have made great software freely available, collaborative projects such as Retrosheet and Baseball DataBank have made great data freely available. You can use these data sources to research your favorite players, win your fantasy league, or appreciate the game of baseball even more than you do now.
Sounds interesting to me.

Comments:
How do you feel when critics are now calling the Dodgers, Boston-West? I really think that you will like Nomar. If he could stay healthy I am positive he could hit atleast .320, and 30 dingers for you guys this year. Dodgers should run away with the west. Same can be said for the Angels in the A.L. I just don't see the scrappy A's being able to shut down Vladdy and friends up in Orange County.

I think the Dodgers will be okay. Colletti has done a decent job of assembling a team that should contend in the West without sacrificing anything significant from the farm. As to the Angels, it's Vlad and hope D-Mac and Kotchman can provide him some protection. The Halos have lost significant pitching this offseason, while the A's have improved a good bit; the Angels look like a second place team to me.
