Angels Get Another Minor League NRI
The Angels acquired yet another minor league non-roster invitee to spring training, one P.J. Connelly. Connelly, whose previous experience consisted of a pair of seasons pitching for the East Carolina University Pirates, which team made the College World Series Super Regionals as the #8 overall seed. Used mostly as the team's swingman with weak strikeout rates (5.79 K/9 in 2005), he went undrafted last year, and signed with the independent Northern League's Winnipeg Goldeneyes, who 16 days ago traded him to the SouthShore (Gary, Ind.) RailCats. This latter club today announced the sale of his contract to the Angels. He is the second Railcat to be selected by the Angels since 2002 (when the team was created), and the tenth in that same time to have been picked up by a major league team. (The other, according to the press release, is Rich Rodrigues, but Baseball Cube doesn't seem to verify that.) Connelly had eight starts, five relief appearances, and a 4-4 record with a 5.65 ERA with Winnipeg.
Comments:
Ah...the Railcats. I go to school in Valpo which is just down the highway from Gary. I know a couple of guys who spent the summer working for the Railcats and one of them did radio broadcasts for them so he know's alot about the Northern League. I'll ask around and see if he remembers anything about PJ Connelly
