Arte Buys KMXE 830 AM

Arte Moreno with an investment group has purchased KMXE 830 AM, for an undisclosed sum.
KMXE, a 50,000-watt station based in the San Fernando Valley, provides 24-hour news, talk and sports programming that includes live coverage of USC football, NASCAR and the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team.

The new owners will add Angels games and other sports in both Spanish and English to reach the Hispanic market, said Angels President Dennis Kuhl, another partner in the acquisition.

"It will also provide an opportunity for advertisers to reach an audience with a buying power of more than $105 billion," Kuhl said in a statement.

Update: MLB.com reports the dollar figure is $42 million. KMXE is the nation's largest Spanish-language AM radio station.

Last I checked, my radio didn't have an SAP button. How's this going to work?

Soccer in Spanish, baseball in English?

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!

I wouldn't completely eliminate Arte using KMXE as a Spanish-only affiliate, as a possibility, Uncle Al, but at the same time, KMXE has twice the nighttime power as KSPN (20 kW vs. 10 kW); both are 50 kW daytime stations. I tend to think that you don't buy a station like that unless you're thinking of buying out the contract and running your own content on it.

Arte has already said the team won't be buying out its contract with espn am 710, which broadcasts the games in english. Believe there are two years remaining on the contract.

One article describing the purchase states the following:

"Angels owner Arte Moreno has expanded his empire by becoming the lead partner in the ownership of Radio 830 KMXE, the nation's largest Spanish language AM radio station."

Wow.

I'm up here in Santa Barbara where KSPN dies at dusk. Guess I'll have to learn Spanish so I can follow the games... "besibol been bery bery gud to me."
