OT: There's Goldfinches In Them Thar Hills

We set out a fresh batch of birdseed in our vertical feeder yesterday, and were rewarded with a flurry of American goldfinches over the last couple of mornings. They're very busy, like the sparrows and house finches whom they resemble in size, but more colorful than the sparrows. We seem to get fairly dowdy birds down here in the flatlands, so it's nice to see them. Their gold breasts are difficult to see unless you use binoculars, or in this case, a telephoto lens.

Comments:
Nice feeder. We hang the feeder socks for the finches just outside the living room window. The cats love to gather against the window and watch attentively and dream of finch snacks. Lately I've seen finches with the most brilliant orange breasts. This is in Rancho Cucamonga. Look for them.

Orange, huh? We get purple finches (which actually are brilliant red) and house finches (a duller red), and the very, very occaisional hummingbird.
