Pickoff Moves
So Long, Joe
The Times writes about why the Angels will miss Joe Maddon:"I think people will miss him more than they think," Salmon said of Maddon, who spent the last 10 years as the Angel bench coach. "We relied a lot on his organizational skills, and he was a great sounding board for every move Mike [Scioscia, Angel manager] wanted to make."They'd run scenarios back and forth, and Joe didn't say yes to whatever the manager said. He'd say no, and this is why I think so. There was a relationship built on trust, and to reestablish that with [new bench coach] Ron Roenicke … I don't know … not that it can't be done, but they'll have to feel each other out.
Yhency Brazoban, Question Mark
What's reliever Yhency Brazoban's status? Not even the Times knows, as he's having visa trouble, may or may not pitch in the WBC, and possibly injured his arm -- or not -- in winter ball this year. Geesh.WBC, Roster Notes
In that same article:- Odalis Perez will appear in the WBC despite his injuries last year, claiming he's in "the best shape of my life."
- Eric Gagné will not make it to the Classic.
- Olmedo Saenz's mother died in Panama, delaying Olmedo's appearance in Vero.
- Franquelis Osoria was delayed getting to spring training because of visa trouble.
- Derek Lowe or Brad Penny will be the team's opening day starter.
- In a separate article, Sammy Sosa will probably retire now that no teams are interested in giving him a guaranteed roster spot. Buster Olney and, in his blogging debut, Peter Gammons ($$$ for both) have more on this. Here's Gammo:
Sosa's friends said Wednesday night that he was not insulted by one $500,000 offer, because he felt that Nationals GM Jim Bowden treated him with respect and offered fair opportunity to reclaim his star.
Olney (whose blog finally fixes the lack of permalinks, for which, huzzah) snarks unfairly about Sosa's alleged connection to steroid, and I'm sure somewhere is smirking about his corked bat, too."Sammy has very high standards for himself," one associate says. "He's 37. Physically and emotionally, last year was very wearing on him, especially emotionally. He expects 40 to 50 home runs. He expects greatness. He doesn't want to go out a shell of what he knows he was."
- Bartolo Colon might not appear in the WBC, either.
- The Padres claimed reliever Jason Anderson off waivers.
Sabean Likes... The Dodgers?
From the upthread Times article:"I think what Ned did was very smart," Sabean said. "I don't want to say it's a quick fix, but he got a lot of people in there who understand what it is to be a professional."Think" being the operative word..."These new signings want to prove themselves. There's going to be a lot of energy. They're going to think they're pretty good."
Fox AL West Preview
We're going to start getting a ton of these, so here's Mike Harmon's AL West preview. Written before the Angels signed Jeff Weaver, he cites the fifth starter as a hole (it was), and likes the A's for the division (who, aside from the Rev and Matt Welch, doesn't?).ESPN Gets Rotoworld Player News
I was looking at Jeff Weaver's ESPN player card when something popped out at me: ESPN is using Rotoworld for their player news these days. That says something about the speed of AP and SportsTicker, who provide virtually all the newswire content on ESPN. Rotoworld usually relies on local newspaper websites, and sometimes, as was the case with Jeff Weaver's signing, they have their own front office moles. It's a good deal for both parties. Why was Saenz's mother going to spring training in the first place? Was she another one of Ned's oldies but goodies "quick fixes?"
