Taken With A Boulder Of Salt: Jeff Weaver An Angel
In the mermaid, hippogriff, and unicorn department, the alleged latest iteration of the Manny Ramirez trade has the Angels' side of the exchange going down as Juan Rivera, Stephen Shell, and Kelvim Escobar. As Matt points out, you can't give up Rivera in this scenario, because you no longer have depth in the outfield to give Anderson and Vlad days off, and Ramirez is nothing if not a full-time DH. And I'm not so convinced that the Angels can afford to surrender Escobar, because they've lost a ton of pitching depth already with the departure of Byrd and the reactivation of Escobar to the rotation.
Beane only paid $2.25M of Redman's contract. It was backloaded, so I really wouldn't call his one year with Oakland part of a "huge contract".
"Jeff Weaver's off-field rep must be hurting him. But the Angels, who also have brother Jered, could become interested."
"Rumors are flying that Jeff Weaver is on the verge of signing a deal with the Angels, a move which would allow them to shift Hector Carrasco into the bullpen. As Mark Simon of ESPN research notes, Weaver hasn't exactly thrived against AL West teams.
"Still think it would be a good signing, if the obligation is for no more than two years."
Note: There's an accompanying table showing Weaver's stats vs. AL West teams. Not good.
