Taken With A Boulder Of Salt: Jeff Weaver An Angel

The Rev, the reliability of whose sources is yet to be determined, claims Jeff Weaver is an Angel on a two-year deal, dollars unknown but essentially "on their terms". The deal will supposedly hit the press on Monday.

In the mermaid, hippogriff, and unicorn department, the alleged latest iteration of the Manny Ramirez trade has the Angels' side of the exchange going down as Juan Rivera, Stephen Shell, and Kelvim Escobar. As Matt points out, you can't give up Rivera in this scenario, because you no longer have depth in the outfield to give Anderson and Vlad days off, and Ramirez is nothing if not a full-time DH. And I'm not so convinced that the Angels can afford to surrender Escobar, because they've lost a ton of pitching depth already with the departure of Byrd and the reactivation of Escobar to the rotation.

Comments:
Based on what I've read, I don't believe the Angels are prepared to spend much more than they did last year on payroll. Therefore, in order to absorb Manny's contract and Weaver's proposed deal, it seems to me, the Angels would have to include another big contract in the Manny trade or in different trade.

The Halos have plenty of potential OF depth, even if Rivera is dealt. As others have noted: Figgins, Erstad, Vlad, Quinlan, Gorneault, TIM SALMON, and of course Ramirez are potential OF candidates. And if Aybar were not included in a deal for some reason, he could potentially be a candidate to be shifted out to CF.

While Beane continues to shell out huge contracts to mediocrites (Redmond, Loiaza); dealer Bill manages to get plus-quality innings eaters on one-year deals.

Beane only paid $2.25M of Redman's contract. It was backloaded, so I really wouldn't call his one year with Oakland part of a "huge contract".

I think Matt was thinking about Esteban Loiaza.

matt likes to think about esteban loaiza :)

... at least, on the mound for the A's, anyway :-)

Does Jeff Weaver have issues? From today's Newsday:

"Jeff Weaver's off-field rep must be hurting him. But the Angels, who also have brother Jered, could become interested."

Here's Buster Olney's Sunday update on Weaver and the Angels:

"Rumors are flying that Jeff Weaver is on the verge of signing a deal with the Angels, a move which would allow them to shift Hector Carrasco into the bullpen. As Mark Simon of ESPN research notes, Weaver hasn't exactly thrived against AL West teams.

"Still think it would be a good signing, if the obligation is for no more than two years."

Note: There's an accompanying table showing Weaver's stats vs. AL West teams. Not good.

Dr. Fats -- on the East Coast, they're still getting used to the idea that the Dodgers have moved. I'm not sure they recognize that baseball is played west of the Mississippi.

Cassius -- thanks for that, will blog about it shortly.
