Bud, Or Somebody Like Him
My wife has family friends here in Scottsdale, and we went to visit them Monday night. Naturally enough, the subject of spring training came up -- how could it not? -- and our host allowed as to how his neighbor used to be a pitcher of some prominence who threw for the Padres and Red Sox, a guy he knew as "Bud". Had a lot of saves, and loved to travel around in his enormous RV, he said -- never at home. This, of course, piqued our interest, and we both thought of former All-Star Rod Beck, whose outstanding record of 51 saves in 1998 with the Cubs came in second only to Trevor Hoffman's 53. A quick search of Google images confirmed our suspicions: "Yeah, that's him," our host said. "And to think, all this time I've been calling him 'Bud'!"
