Yesterday's News: Channel 56 The Backup Plan?
Since yesterday was spent decompressing from the drive back from Phoenix, I didn't get to this Times story about Arte's snail's-pace negotiations for the team's TV contract. Despite earlier noises that the deal was almost done, time keeps slipping away, and the closer the Angels get to the regular season without ink on paper, the closer they get to losing revenue. Fox is probably using this as negotiating leverage, but Arte's talking to channel 56 to have them air "most" of the team's games, just in case.Roster Notes
- Darin Erstad has a sore ankle (a condition the Register says is a sprain) and won't return until Monday at the earliest. He also has a "dead arm" that needs to adjust to playing center, a position he hasn't spent time at in two years.
- The Angels sent Dallas McPherson to minor league camp to get in some swings, and Nick Gorneault was sent down as well.
- Jered Weaver says "I'm starting to feel like I did back in college" following his strong five-inning game on Friday. Weaver struck out five and walked four on his way to the win.
- Bartolo Colón was removed in the sixth inning of the Cuba/Dominican Republic final game due to a finger blister. Odalis Perez, Salomon Torres, and Julian Tavarez combined to give up the go-ahead runs to the Cubans.
- Garret Anderson thinks he'll be well enough to play by opening day.
- Giants closer Armando Benitez had a cortisone injection in his knee on Wednesday and won't be able to throw for several days.
- Are the A's really at full strength? Then why has Frank Thomas only now started to swing the bat in spring training? Thomas doubled, walked three times, and struck out in games facing AAA and AA pitching yesterday.
- Eric Gagné needs two days off between outings? Better hope the Dodgers have a great offense -- or a lousy one ...
- Despite all the hoopla about Choi being given short shrift, it looks like he may make the team after all, though it still makes little sense for Nomar to start instead of him, the last plan we heard about. On the other hand, he's only in the running with Joel Guzman, Andre Ethier, and Cody Ross. Ross might end up traded; he's out of options, and has had a strong spring, hitting .364/.440/1.000, including four home runs.
- The Dodgers' rotation is set as Derek Lowe, Brad Penny, Odalis Perez, Brett Tomko and Jae Seo; the bullpen consists of Eric Gagné, Danys Baez, Lance Carter and Yhency Brazoban, and two more relievers picked from the pile of Kelly Wunsch, Hong-Chih Kuo, Tim Hamulack, Aaron Sele, Takashi Saito, Franquelis Osoria, and Jonathan Broxton. D.J. Houlton appears to be out of the mix following a lousy spring (7.71 ERA in 7.0 IP). Grady Little says he's impressed with Sele, saying he thinks he could throw out of the bullpen. If he does, maybe he should give him some snacks along the way, just in case.
If You're Going To Make A Statement, Don't Whisper
Despite a series of consecutive lousy season, Mariners fans are largely taking it with aplomb; so far, season ticket sales are only down by 2,000. Hope dies hard...Dayn Perry Ranks The Farm Systems
Dayn Perry ranks farm systems, and puts the Dodgers on top, while dropping the Angels to fifth, behind the Snakes, Marlins, and Indians, as rated by the number of prospects showing up on his top 100. If rated on his point system (100 points for the first-rated prospect on his top 100, 99 for the second rated prospect, etc.), the Angels turn around and beat Cleveland, but the Dodgers slip to second place, too, behind the Diamondbacks.Newer› ‹Older
