Pickoff Moves
A's 6, Angels 5
Ervin Santana had another one of his inconsistent results, giving up five earned runs in four innings of work; you worry about him when he says things like"I got beat, but with my good stuff," Santana said. "Sometimes you have bad stuff and pitch a good game and sometimes you have good stuff and have a bad game."The Angels got beat by perennial spring training hanger-on Scott McClain, who hit the game winning RBI single, off Scott Dunn, whose 10.57 ERA doesn't look too comforting.
Cardinals 4, Dodgers 2
Jae Seo gave up three earned runs in five, and... wait for it... Seo what? Ah, that feels better. If all they need him to be is a fifth starter, well, that's what they got. Scott Spiezio, the former Angel and now a bench candidate for the Cards, is hitting .245 in spring, and why did they invite him?Roster Notes
- The Dodgers sent Takashi Saito and Andre Ethier to minor league camp.
- After an initial scare, it turns out that Cody Ross's hand isn't broken after all. Initial X-rays appeared to find a break, but doctors determined it was the site of a previous fracture. Ross has broken his hands or wrists "five or six times".
- Jae Seo says his poor performance in yesterday's game came from jet lag and an inability to pitch the way he wanted to in early innings.
Seven of the first 13 batters Seo faced reached base, when he said he was going primarily with catcher Russell Martin's pitch selection.
According to the Times, Seo is expected to have two starts in April, and would work as a swingman the rest of the month. Seo has a fastball that tops out at 87 MPH."In the second half of the game, I went with my style so he could see how I like to pitch," said Seo, who retired eight consecutive batters at one point.
- Cesar Izturis will have an MRI done at the beginning of April to evaluate his progress, and should return to the lineup in late May, a month earlier than had been predicted.
- In the latest slag on Dallas McPherson's bat, the Angels are thinking about trading for a left-handed bat, and would like to move Kevin Gregg and/or Esteban Yan to do it. In reality, it sounds like they want to move Kevin Gregg and/or Esteban Yan and are willing to take a lousy bat -- in which case, Curtis Pride might make the team after all.
- Update: Mariner centerfielder Jeremy Reed broke his hand and will miss a minimum of six weeks, and could miss in excess of eight weeks.
- Derrek Lee and the Cubs are near to a long-term extension.
- Those following the adventures of Edwin Jackson in Tampa Bay will be interested to know that the Devil Rays' rotation is fixed up to the fifth slot, with Doug Waechter and Edwin Jackson battling it out. Waechter is the favorite, but we'll see how it goes after tomorrow's start for Jackson... against the Yankees.
- The A's say that Antonio Perez was actually hit in the nose by the foul ball he took to the face on Thursday, and is day-to-day.
SB Nation's AL West Roundup: Angels Chat
The last of the SB Nation AL West roundups are in at Halos Heaven, for the Angels of course. I think Blez is talking some smack about the Angels finishing third, but so goes it.Prospecty
Hey, did you know that the Angels' new rookie-league hitting coach, Rodney Davis, has a son, Khris, who's the top high school prospect in Arizona? It'd be kinda cool if, like Casey Kotchman, the team could get some good production from inside its own walls, as it were. Khris plans to attend CSUF if he doesn't like where he ends up getting drafted.Newer› ‹Older
