Red Sox Claim Choi Off Waivers

Via AP and dodgers.com, the Red Sox have claimed Hee Seop Choi off waivers. My initial feeling is that this is a remarkably dumb move, but how dumb depends on how close you think James Loney is with the bat, and whether Nomar Garciaparra will give you better performance at first. Certainly, Choi's WBC performances didn't gather widespread acclaim, and neither, in certain quarters, did his regular season appearances with the Dodgers. It troubles me that he's headed to Boston, which may well be his last stop in baseball -- or the beginning of a real career, perhaps not as bright as once thought, but serviceable, at any rate, and with an organization that understands how to employ him. As with Edwin Jackson, if he does well there, it bodes as a black mark on Ned Colletti's tenure. I'll be watching.

I'll be watching.
All Dodger fans should be.

Dude, the Red Sox have made a string of ridiculously good moves this offseason. Picking up Choi in itself is not necessarily a great move, but the guy certainly has huge potential and is a servicable player no matter what, but the fact that they got him for nothing is phenomenal. Why does every team want to give Boston a dollar for every fifty cents they get back?

Well, we now know that "Boston" is the answer to Where is the love for Hee Seop Choi?

I can see it now. My Red Sox friend Griot razzing me because Hee Seop Choi has a better 2006 season for the Bosox than Nomar Garciaparra does for the Dodgers! I do not expect that, but I do predict than the Dodgers will win more games (85?) than Nomar plays games.
