Roster Notes
- Edgardo Alfonso, forgetting his punchless .277/.327/.345 line last year, has a demand: he wants to play every day.
"We want to maximize his playing time," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "This guy is a professional hitter when he's right."
Didn't we hear similar things about Finley last year? I hope Mike learned his lesson... - Darin Erstad's foot soreness has been rediagnosed as a bone spur on his foot, but this is not expected to alter his playing time (what?!).
- Dallas McPherson's cold start looks like it has ended his chances to start at the major league level this season; the Times says he and Kendry Morales are behind Tim Salmon and Robb Quinlan to make the team.
- Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Ryan Budde, Jonathan Rouwenhorst, Dustin Moseley, and Nate Bland were all sent down to minor league camp.
- Bartolo Colón would slot to be the team's opening day starter, though no one is saying that just yet.
- Garret Anderson and Darin Erstad should both be back late this week.
- Speaking of starting pitchers, the Angels are scheduled to have Kelvim Escobar make the home opener as the starting pitcher.
- Grady Little, propagandist:
"I think [Derek Lowe] is getting himself geared up to have a great season," Little said after Sunday's Grapefruit League game, a 9-1 victory over the Washington Nationals before 4,372 at Holman Stadium. "This guy has total focus on what he is trying to do out there, and he has the natural ability to make that happen."
Lowe has a spring training ERA of 0.69. - Dioner Navarro is jogging, but won't be back until after the 10 days to two weeks the team thinks it will take for him to fully recover. If he isn't available by opening day, Russell Martin will play until Navarro's available, with Sandy Alomar, Jr. backing him up. What dumb team construction.
- Jae Seo will probably be skipped, even if he returns to camp this week and pitches well.
- Derek Lowe has an amazing new system:
Every pitcher strives to throw first-pitch strikes, but Derek Lowe takes the concept a bit further. "I throw the first pitch down the middle," he said. "It's that important to me to get ahead in the count.
The Giants, Diamondbacks, Padres, and Rockies all say, "thank you"."Even if a guy hits it, it's not jacking up my pitch count."

Lowe had to be joking, since pitchers never seriously discuss pitch counts.

I have to laugh at the Erstad bone spur. They say it's not expected to cause him to miss any time...where's he been the last few days, then? I know it's spring training and better to err on the side of caution, but the ankle doesn't know that. Inflammation and pain are inflammation and pain regardless of time of year. I don't see this as something that will just "go away". The bone spur is there and only surgery will make it go away (see Escobar, K. 2005)

I'm actually optimistic that it means McPherson will get a real chance after spending a month or so in the minors.
if you really believe Lowe, I'm concerned for you. The movement on his ball allows him to throw it down the middle at times though.

This is really beginning to look like it's going to be a long frustrating year for the Halos.
