Minor League Scorebook
No news today, so straight to the scores...
2006-04-08: Salt Lake 7, Tucson 3 #
Aybar, E: 2-5, 3 RBI
Kendrick, H: 2-4, 1 RBI
McPherson: 0-3, 1 K
Morales: 1-5
Gorneault: 1-5
Murphy: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Specht: 3-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Weaver, Jer: (W, 1-0), 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 8 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 1.29 ERA
A batter an inning... that's all we ask. Jered Weaver was simply brilliant in his first AAA start. (Ignore the picture in the story, which shows Weaver in a Travs uniform.) Striking out eight over seven innings, he gave up only a solo homer to Scott Hairston and a triple -- ironically enough -- to former system-mate Alberto Callaspo, and that only because CF Tommy Murphy lost his flyball in the sun. 63 of 83 pitches went for strikes. If they do call up Jered this week -- very hard to believe -- I'll be in the stadium come hell or high water. Rich Lederer, too.

Peel, A: 2-4
Wood: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wilson: 0-2, 1 BB
Eylward: 2-4, 1 2B
Holcomb: (L, 0-1), 5.2 IP, 0 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Stuart Pomerantz had a great game, while James Holcomb wasn't quite good enough, taking the loss on a two unearned runs. Somewhere there was a ninth inning rally that ended with a botched suicide squeeze; apparently, those only work for Mike Scioscia.

Leblanc: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB

Toussaint: 1-2, 1 BB, 1 K

DeLoizaga-Carney: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Rancho wasn't supposed to get much in the way of offense this year, so how comes it Sean Rodriguez, not exactly known for his power, slams one into the seats? You don't ask questions, I guess. Gotta be the name of the week: Jayce Tingler.

Coon: 2-6, 1 RBI
Statia: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-3
Madrigal: 1-5, 1 K
Reilly: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 3B
Martinez: 2-5, 2 K
Shearer: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 1.80 ERA
Mattison: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Kelly Shearer's a 14th-round pick with an undistinguished record; like a lot of the Angels' picks, he's a high-school pitcher. He got shelled in a brief stint at Provo in 2004, but came up with a respectable 3.62 ERA and a 2-4 record, though with a 6.26 K/9 that doesn't speak especially highly of his ability to get guys to swing and miss. His two strikeouts in today's game didn't disabuse me of that.

Most of the night's offense came off the bat of Pat Reilly, a former U. Arizona player of dubious strike zone control (35/4 K/BB ratio at Orem last year). He also scored two runs.

Broxton: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
It's not clear why Sele only pitched four innings here, but two walks, four hits, and four strikeouts don't necessarily sound that bad in the terrible pitching conditions at Vegas. Nonetheless, the Dodgers decided to let Broxton close the game, and he did in fine style, striking out the side.
