Minor League Scorebook
News
Not much in the way of news tonight --- I must say it's pretty cool that all the PCL (and IL) games are available on Gameday.
- Travelerocity does a team-by-team study of the Texas League and finds the Travs rank 95th in the minors in attendance, averaging about 3,000 per game despite a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) rated 80th in the country, and one appreciably larger than Springfield, whose Cardinals franchise averages around 7,500 per game despite a population about half that of Little Rock. He attributes much of the difference to a noticeably aging Ray Winder Field; despite its charms, the seats are decidely built for smaller people.
- Did you know Matt Kemp kept a journal in spring training? (I didn't!) His latest is somewhat shorter.

Wow what a wild one! Kevin Gregg started and got in three scoreless innings to start, matching his counterpart Eric Stults — when Kasey Olenberger came in. He promptly gave up three earned runs on hits by Joel Guzman, Delwyn Young, Chris Truby, and Oscar Robles. Salt Lake answered with a run in the top of the fifth on a weakly hit single that plated Dallas McPherson, who had arrived on base by way of a fielder's choice. Vegas came right back in their half, with Jon Weber scoring on an Andre Ethier sac fly.
Then in the sixth, the Bees' offense exploded when Harold Eckert relieved starte Eric Stults. Sending nine men to the plate and homering three times (Gorneault, Napoli, and Budde), the Stingers amassed a seemingly-sturdy 7-4 lead.
But the 51's weren't to be denied, scratching out a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Russell Martin double and a pair of groundouts off new callup Marcus Gwyn. In the eighth, the 51's got another run, this time off Greg Jones, who allowed an RBI double to Martin.
The final surge came in the eighth. Following a walk by Andre Ethier, Joel Guzman singled to left, and Delwyn Young struck out on a wild pitch — allowing both baserunners to advance to second and third. Intentionally walking the bases loaded to get to Wilson Valdez, Jones gave up a game-winning single to left. Whew. This is gonna be one hell of a series.
