Minor League Scorebook

News

Stephen Smith's not-so-dormant FutureAngels points our attention to this Times story about Colton Simpson, son of former Angel Dick Simpson. Last year, Colton published Inside the Crips, a tale of his life among the Crips. It's a long story, and as with everything over there, he provides no permalinks; suffice to say it's a tale of racism, poverty, and homicide. Pretty brutal stuff.

Scores

2006-04-12: Salt Lake 4, Las Vegas 0 #
Aybar, E: 0-5, 2 K
Kendrick, H: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K
Napoli, M: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
McPherson: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Morales: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Murphy: 4-4, 1 3B
Pride: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Moseley: (W, 2-0), 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 1.64 ERA
Bulger: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
One strikeout and a single for Dallas McPherson in a game that the Bees led from the fourth inning on. Kendry Morales slammed a solo homer against Houlton in the fourth, while the 51's scratched out our four hits but struck out ten times, the only extra base hit being Willy Aybar's double in the first (he was thrown out at third).
2006-04-12: Arkansas 5, Wichita 4 #
Peel, A: 2-4, 1 RBI
Wood: 0-3, 1 BB
Brown: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wilson: 1-4, 1 RBI
Pullin: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Zimmermann: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Feast or famine for Brandon Wood, who only walked once tonight. Eric Rodland was the hero tonight on an RBI single in the top of the ninth. Starter Dan Davidson gave up four earned runs over 5.2 IP.
2006-04-12: High Desert 3, Rancho Cucamonga 12 #
Sandoval, F: 2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 3-5, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Collins: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Sutton: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Green: (W, 2-0), 6.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.31 ERA
I have heard that Rancho is supposed to be offensively challenged this year. It certainly doesn't hurt when your opposition makes four errors, Sean Rodriguez is hitting like he wants a repeat of his 2004 Midwest League Player of the Year award, and Freddy Sandoval homers twice; Sandoval had four homers all last year for Cedar Rapids. Nick Green twirled a fantastic six and two thirds innings, striking out seven with a solo homer and a walk.
2006-04-12: Peoria 3, Cedar Rapids 7 #
Statia: 0-2
Madrigal: 0-3
Renz: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 K
Wipke: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Adenhart: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.00 ERA
Mattison: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Much as we may love Jered Weaver, it's widely said that Nick Adenhart may have even better stuff; today he struck out a batter an inning, while a battery of random players provided the offense, with DH Jordan Renz clubbing four runners in.
2006-04-12: AZL Angels did not play
2006-04-12: Orem did not play
2006-04-12: Salt Lake 4, Las Vegas 0 #
Aybar: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Guzman, J: 0-3, 2 K
Young, D: 0-3, 2 K
Martin, R: 1-3
Houlton: (L, 0-1), 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 9 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.82 ERA
Simmons: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 3.60 ERA
Houlton... well, he has a ways to go.
2006-04-12: Montgomery 5, Jacksonville 0 #
Abreu: 1-5, 1 K
Hu: 1-4, 1 K
Raglani: 0-4, 1 K
LaRoche: 0-3, 1 BB
Kemp: 1-4, 2 K
Zapp: 2-4, 2 K
Orenduff, J: (L, 0-1), 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 7.71 ERA
Nall: 3.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
Starter Tony Peguero of the Biscuits went six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Justin Orenduff only allowed a pair of runs while getting seven strikeouts over 5.2 IP, but minus run support, you don't get the W.
2006-04-12: Vero Beach 3, Jupiter 4 #
Hoffmann: 1-5, 1 K
Paul, X: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Dewitt: 0-5
Denker, T: 0-3, 1 BB
Carter, R: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 K
Johnson, B: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 7.45 ERA
Thomas: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Castillo, A: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 9.00 ERA
The score was tied 3-3 from the sixth on, when Jupiter won this one on a bases-loaded sac fly in the ninth. First baseman Jason Mooneyham is off to a hot start, hitting .368 despite only getting one hit in today's game.
2006-04-12: Charleston 1, Columbus 3 #
Godwin: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
May: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Locke: 1-2, 2 BB
Harper: 0-4, 4 K
Rivera: 1-3, 1 K
Leach: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 0.82 ERA
Pfeiffer: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 7.36 ERA
Wade: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.00 ERA
Despite a ninth-inning rally by Charleston — started when Catfish pitcher Cory Wade hit Mario Holmann — Columbus won this game in the fifth on a scoring wild pitch by Cory Stuart. Maximally confusing: Columbus also has a Juan Rivera.
2006-04-12: GCL Dodgers did not play
2006-04-12: Ogden did not play

Comments:
I believe Sean Rodriguez was 2004 player of the year for Provo, the Angels Pioneer League affiliate at that time.

What do you make of this Moseley kid? The Angels org has been radio silent on him for awhile. But he went scoreless in spring training, and has 11 Ks in as many innings at Salt Lake so far.

Worth watching?

Dustin Moseley was the return on the Ramon Ortiz trade from the Reds. At one time, Moseley was the Reds' top-rated pitching prospect, but his K/9 cratered last year (4.15) after changing from the IL to the PCL, and he has fallen off the radar. At 23, he still has some time to re-establish himself, and his spring numbers are a good sign. Yes, he's probably worth keeping an eye on if he continues to do well.

Anon -- that was from memory. Now I'll have to check.

I assumed his aberrant stats from last season were a result of injury. I remember him in his first ST with the Angels, and he looked good, then he grasped his forearm, walked off the mound, and was gone for months.

23 at AAA is still quite young.

Oops, he'll be pitching his age 24 season. Still, the PCL is pretty rough on pitchers.
