Minor League Scorebook
News
- MILB.com has notebooks up today or yesterday for the following leagues: Pacific Coast League, Cal League, Texas League, and Florida State League. Update: ... and the Southern League.
- This guy at Fox Sports thinks Jered Weaver will get called up soon, but maybe he didn't see his last start.
- ESPN's Page 2 has a piece about baseball's most valuable players, and here's guest writer Nate Silver's comment about Brandon Wood:
We're very excited about Brandon Wood. It's just that we seem to be slightly less excited about him than everyone else. The California League, the home for Wood's 101 extra-base hits last season, is an environment that yielded 11.5 runs per game last season, roughly equivalent to a pre-humidor year at Coors Field. Wood also needs to improve his strike zone judgment, and he's likely to move from shortstop to third base -- although that has more to do with the prodigiousness of his offense than his lack of glove. For now, our best guess is that he'll wind up with a career like Adrian Beltre's, but it won't take much more convincing -- Wood is off to a hot start at Double-A Arkansas -- to get us buying into the Cal Ripken/Mike Schmidt scenarios.
Adrian Beltre? Them's fightin' words... here's Silver on Howie Kendrick:OK, so Baseball Prospectus has been beating on the batting-average-is-overrated drum since it came out of the womb. But when a player hits .360 over his first 1,200 professional at-bats, there comes a point when you just throw all that out the window, and just give credit to a guy who is looking more and more like he might be a once-in-a-generation, Tony Gwynn-type contact hitter. Or even scarier, Tony Gwynn with 20 home runs a season, and playing at a premium defensive position. Kendrick has a less risky profile than Wood, and may have just as much upside.
- Five minor leaguers were caught using steroids. Angels righthander Karl Gelinas was given a 50 day suspension as a first-time violator.
- The Padres optioned Terrmel Sledge to AAA Portland. Sledge tore a hamstring shagging a flyball at Dodger Stadium last year when he was with the Nationals, and surgery ended his season.

I was informed that yesterday's "rain"-postponed game was actually postponed because of six inches of snow. You forget here in SoCal how the rest of the country has it...

It was the Nick Gorneault Show in Salt Lake, as the Bees beat the Sidewinders 4-2 on the strength of Gorneault's three-run shot. Dustin Moseley, who used to be a contenda, managed his second consecutive quality start and is on his way to recharging his status as a prospect, so far striking out a batter per inning since the start of the season. Good news for Dallas McPherson, who DH'd today: though he only went 1-4, he didn't strike out at all.
This was Howie Kendrick's first 0-fer game all year. He has also had one walk all year.

Wood: 1-4, 3 K
Brown: 2-3, 1 BB
Wilson: 0-3, 1 BB
Shell: (L, 1-2), 7.2 IP, 3 ER, 9 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.00 ERA
Thompson: 1.1 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.32 ERA
Looks like all of McPherson's strikeouts went into Wood's bat. Wood hasn't homered in eight straight games, and has collected a pair of doubles over that time as his only extra-base hits. Stephen Shell had a good game but didn't get a win despite the quality start.

Toussaint: 0-4, 3 K
Sutton: 0-1, 2 BB
Green: (L, 2-1), 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2.87 ERA
This was the offensive problem we expected to see, as the Quakes ended up on the wrong side of a Storm two-hitter. Sean Rodriguez came back from his earlier knee injury, but neither he nor anyone else on the Quakes did much of anything, aside from Matt Pali's homer. Nick Green drove in a Storm run himself with a bases-loaded walk in the first, returning a favor given Ranch by Storm starter Evan Meek, who walked Matt Pali with the bases loaded.

Aldridge: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 6.00 ERA
Not only was that Mark Trumbo's first home run of the year, it was his first extra base hit. Nick Adenhart continues to amaze; he's striking out better than a batter per inning (9.40 K/9) and a 3.80 K/BB ratio, just astonishing.

Broxton: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
What a romp! The 51's stomped all over the Giants' AAA affiliate Fresno, popping three homers in all, while Aaron Sele handled the Grizzlies' offense. Broxton closed the game out, although I still don't trust that walk.

Diaz: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.80 ERA
A really strong outing by Heath Totten. Just a little more run support and they could have won it; as it was, the Mudcats took the game in the eighth. Carolina starter James Russ struck out seven straight batters, and finished with ten total over seven innings, one strikeout away from equalling the Southern League record. He did not get the win, however; Matt Yourkin sealed the deal in the ninth and got the save. Matt Kemp's two-run shot in the third was the entirety of the Suns' offense.

Troncoso: 2.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 10.12 ERA
A tough luck loss for Scott Elbert, who goes 0-2 on the loss; Ramon Troncoso blew up in the seventh and eighth innings, surrendering a bases-clearing double in the seventh, and a two-run homer in the eighth.

McDonald: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.45 ERA
A brutal extra-innings contest that Greenville won in the top of the 13th, the Catfish at least fought to a draw in the ninth. With Lucas May picking up a walk on pitcher Kyle Fernandes, Adam Godwin sacrificed him to second, and a Juan Rivera single to right tied the game. Sergio Pedroza tried to get the win on a double to right, but right fielder Luis Soto nailed Rivera out at the plate. Greenville won when James McDonald gave up a solo homer to Christopher Turner, and an RBI single from Logan Sorensen.
