Month Of Predictionary: Murray Chass Likes The Angels

New York Times baseball columnist Murray Chass likes the Angels to win the division, but "not much beyond that":
Their owner, Arte Moreno, might be geographically challenged, but the Angels know where and how to play. In the past four seasons, they have won the World Series once and the A.L. West title twice. They should make that three times this season, and then they could showcase one division trophy each in Anaheim, Azusa and Rancho Cucamonga.

The Angels' real claim to fame, other than winning the lawsuit that enables them to keep their silly name — the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim — is that they have knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs two of the past four years.

Not that they have let that achievement make them starry eyed, but the Angels did not do much this winter to improve their chances of going beyond vanquishing the Yankees in October.

They signed Jeff Weaver to replace Jarrod Washburn in the pitching rotation, they added J. C. Romero and Hector Carrasco to the relief crew and they signed Edgardo Alfonzo for backup infield duty. They added no offense to their lineup.

But they have put Darin Erstad back in center field and replaced him at first base with Casey Kotchman, and they have replaced one Molina, Bengie, with another, Jose, behind the plate.
