Pickoff Moves
Nomar's Not-So-New Beginning
Yeah, the usual fluff:"You never know what's going to happen -- you can't predict anything," Garciaparra said. "I've never looked too far ahead. I've gone where life has taken me and been grateful. It's gotten me to another wonderful place, and I'm excited. And, he's looking forward to full use of his groin, his wrist, etc."I don't see it as a new beginning or a fresh start. I look forward to new experiences, new challenges. I'm looking forward to being part of this team."
Woo Hoo! Angels/Fox Agree On TV Contract
Like the sign says. The dollar amount won't be changing -- it's still $500M over ten years -- and 150 games per year, although it looks like this year Fox will air 100 games and channel 13 will air 50.Quote, Unquote
Angels pitching prospect Jonathan Rouwenhorst, on what it takes to convert the Dodgers faithful:"My dad loved the Dodgers growing up and I just kind of followed in his footsteps," Rouwenhorst said. "They're all coming around to the Angels now that I'm playing for them."Outside of the "playing for them" part, I know what he means...
Random Bullety Stuff
- The newly-christened Salt Lake Bees like the hand they've been dealt by the Angels.
- Mike Scioscia will start Jose Molina on the season opener thanks to his "sizzling spring", one in which he hit .372 and drove in 10.
- Tim Salmon will play 2-4 times a week getting at bats on an as-available basis, with seconds available as he hits well.
- Matt Welch continues his dormant Angels position players roundup with a look at left field, including the bestest season ever by an Angels left fielder -- that well-known slugger, Darin Erstad. He also uncorks his wild cards (i.e., the guys who will come outta nowhere to make some noise) and AL West and World Series finish. No surprise that he picks the Angels to win it all; homer!
- The Dodgers could win 90 games, says Grady Little, and I don't put it past them; but given their injury history and age, losing 90 games is a real possibility, too. Those kids had better be ready.
- Eric Gagné has a virus and is questionable for today's opener.
- With the major league regular season warming up, it's time to also remember that the minor leagues will start their season soon, too. The Chronicler has his first watch list for the minor leaguers up for the year. Most of these guys are already on the Baseball America, Bryan Smith, John Sickels, and Baseball Prospectus lists, but it's a good comprehensive roundup. The nightly Minor League Scorebook posts will commence with the minor league season, which starts today for the Ogden Raptors, in June for the short-season complex leagues, and Thursday, April 6 for pretty much everyone else (save the Quakes):
April 3: Raptors
April 6: 51's, Bees, Catfish, (Vero Beach) Dodgers, Kernels, Suns, Travs
April 7: Quakes
June 20: GCL Dodgers, Owlz
June 22: ASL Angels
Tribune Co. To Sell Cubs? Nah
More rumor-spinning from the Times: is the Tribune Corp. about to sell the Cubs? So far it's only speculation, and TribCo is saying "no". Me, I think they'd be better off dynamiting Wrigley and getting a good owner.Angels 4, Dodgers 2
Is anyone else out there concerned that the first two games of the Freeway Series ended in ties? It says more about the Angels offense than it does about the Dodgers pitching...Newer› ‹Older
