Pickoff Moves
A couple of quickies so I can finish rebuilding my parser --
Jake Daubert BRO b. 1884, played 1910-1918, d. 1924-10-09
Bobby Mitchell LAN b. 1955, played 1980-1981
Bill Stoneman CAL b. 1944, played 1974
Brandon Wood Homers In Opening Day Appearance
Oh, yeah, baby, and that included a double, going 2-4 with a two-run shot that broke a tie, and had the game-winning double. The Travs won, 5-4.Update: Here's an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette story about the Travs' lineup, focusing on Brandon Wood:
“He’s going to get to the big leagues, it’s just a matter of how fast and it’s a matter of how he develops,” Manager Ty Boykin said of Wood, the Angels’ top draft pick out of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Horizon High School in 2003. “He’s come a long way, he’s playing above what everybody expected the past couple of years so we need to put guys around him to, not show him the way, but to kind of lead the way for him.”Bob Zimmermann also advanced to AA with Wood, as did catcher Bobby Wilson, but the funny thing is reading that the Angels acquired 2B Eric Rodland via the Rule 5 draft; isn't this system swimming in up-the-middle prospects enough that they could have found somebody to play second at Arkansas?
Billingsley Holds Down Grizzlies
Chad Billingsley kept the Grizzlies down to two earned runs over five innings in a strong opening day performance at Las Vegas. The 51's won, 7-2, with a pair of RBIs from Andre Ethier.Birthdays

R.A. Dickey Ties Single-Game Homer Record
Rangers pitcher R.A. Dickey tied the single-game homers allowed record with six homers, five of them solo shots. He has no business being on a major league staff.UTK Quick Hits
From yesterday's UTK (will get today's comments about Gagné out ASAP):- My e-mail inbox buckled today with the questions about Derek Lowe. That Lowe and many others in the game use substances such as Ritalin and Adderall should come as no surprise. That Lowe is allowed to use the substance despite the new amphetamine ban should also surprise no one. We’ve discussed the therapeutic use waiver in this space before and all indications are that Lowe went through the proper procedures to gain his waiver. There’s no definitive study that shows whether or not athletes who need these drugs to function gain any performance enhancement, but the judgement has been made within the game that these can be exempted, not only in baseball, but in most sports. That doesn’t address the abuse of these drugs by some players and highlights the problem that the waiver procedure is designed to protect against.
- All signs point to Cesar Izturis starting a minor league rehab by the end of April, putting him on track to come back at some point in May. The maximum length of a rehab stint is 30 days, He’s already throwing, long-tossing from 150 feet and making some plays in the field during the spring. It’s unclear where he’ll play once he’s back or if the back problems he was dealing with before the elbow surgery have cleared up. Many teams will be watching Izturis’ comeback in anticipation of the Dodgers dealing him before the deadline.
- Frank Thomas can still hit, but reader O.T. was at last night’s game and says he “looked horrible running. He was visibly limping while running to score and trotted in the 8th before being lifted for a pinch runner. He’s changed his batting stance a little, lifting the ankle a bit.” The question is whether this problem is going to hold up and if not, how long until it breaks down. Larry Davis and the A’s staff have their work cut out for them on this one.
Comments:
There is the major league portion of the Rule 5 (not Rule V) draft, and the minor league portion. Minor leaguers so taken do not have to be on the 25-man roster, but do appear an another similar "reserve" roster appropriate to the AA or AAA level.
