Pickoff Moves

Administrivia: Image Server Down

Owing to a fairly complicated series of problems, the server that I normally use for processing images is down. (For the technically minded, it appears that Time Warner Cable now blocks DNS requests, in addition to outbound mail, for whatever reason. Also, our hosting provider changed their tune — without telling us — about whether the server should be referenced in the DNS records via a CNAME or via a straight IP address A record.) I'm working on resolving this as soon as possible. It shouldn't affect much around here save for images on the existing posts and any old slideshows laying around.

Jered Weaver Mentions Accelerate

Of course it doesn't make sense — why bring up a kid who's barely pitched at the AAA level, even if he had a brilliant start at the PCL's equivalent of Coors Field?
Peter Gammons saw Weaver in person earlier this spring and said his "stuff is far more powerful than that of his brother." Buster Olney called Weaver "terrific" and said that he keeps hearing that he "looks great."
But looking at the roster, such a move would be difficult to justify if it's only for one emergency start, unless the team disabled Escobar. Would they do it? The Daily Breeze says the team will decide today whether Hector Carrasco makes the start in Escobar's place, and mentions Weaver as a possible candidate, but also notes that Escobar might pitch Wednesday, too. Adding to this is a Register story noting Bartolo Colón's groin problems; there could be a couple holes in the rotation by week's end, especially if John Lackey struggles against Texas, a team against whom he has a lifetime 5.36 ERA and Scioscia has to plug the hole with more relievers. (Said story also quotes Escobar as being more optimistic about making his regular start, but says it's "50-50".) Stay tuned...

Update: I just got a press release from the Travs indicating that RHP Marcus Gwyn has been promoted to AAA Salt Lake, with RHP Michel Simard getting a callup from Rancho. Interestinger and interestinger...

Jackie Robinson Day, Again

Amazing to read of it now, but Jackie Robinson's ascent to AAA Montreal wasn't considered newsworthy at the time. While last year's rememberances were noteworthy to me, it was more because of the ensuing traffic accident we got into than because of the quality of the ceremonies. (By the way, we got the check from the insurers just last week; ah, the wheels of justice.)

Comments:
Does Maicier Izturis still have options left? I could see him going down for a day while Weaver the Younger is called up for a start and sent back down afterwards.
