Dodgers Contacted By Cactus League
The Dodgers were contacted by Glendale, AZ officials about joining the Cactus League for spring training. Tradition or no, I think it's a fine idea; Vero's too far away, and the Grapefruit League games are too widely dispersed.Update: The Times says "there is considerable sentiment in the Dodger hierarchy to move from the Grapefruit League to the Cactus League."
The Dodgers have held spring training at Dodgertown in Vero Beach since 1948 and last contemplated leaving in 2001. Indian River County and the city of Vero Beach responded by purchasing Dodgertown for $11 million, pouring $8 million into renovations and leasing the property back to the team through 2021 for $1 a year. The Dodgers would have to repay nearly all of the $19 million if they left Dodgertown, an amount some team officials believe could be recouped in operating costs by holding spring training in Arizona. An increase in attendance would be expected — Holman Stadium holds only 6,500 — and travel costs would decrease.
Roster Notes
Buncha Dodger stuff left over from last night:- Kent, Shaken, Not Stirred (To Retire): Jeff Kent feels better today after his beaning on Sunday:
"I've been hit in the head a few times," said Kent. "That one hurt. I should have retired. One pitch too late."
- Cody Ross was DFA'd, reluctantly, and Oscar Robles brought up. Ross will likely be claimed, though "trade interest in him has been 'mild.'".
- Nomar is supposedly closer to returning. During the game broadcast yesterday, Vinny said that he was hitting the ball over the fence to dead center during batting practice.
- Jayson Werth's rehab has stalled, as the latest MRI has been inconclusive. He is looking for a second opinion.
- Tim Salmon still has groin tweak issues which kept him out of Monday's game.
- K-Rod feels much better, and was available for Monday's game.
- Juan Rivera was a late scratch Monday because of ribcage tightness.
Comments:
Hey Rob, I'm not sure if you're aware about the deal b/w Fox Sports and Charter Cable whereby Fox Sports is charging a premium in order to broadcast Angels games, and Charter is refusing to pay. Everyone with Charter Cable in So-Cal wasn't able to watch the game on TV last night, and after having my bud call Charter, they said somethin to the effect that they aren't sure if they are going to air any of the games. You think the Angels/Arte give a damn that Charter won't air the games? Dish Network/DirecTV here I come.
