Minor League Scorebook

It's Monday, which automatically means a lot of news. Let's get busy...

Scores

2006-05-08: Tacoma 7, Salt Lake 9 #
Aybar, E: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Willits, R: 0-1, 3 BB, 1 K
Gorneault: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K
McPherson: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Mathis, J: 1-3, 1 BB
Morales: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Eylward: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Saunders: (W, 4-1), 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 4.02 ERA
Rouwenhorst: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.32 ERA
Bulger: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.57 ERA
Saunders struggled to make a seven-run first inning from his offense stand up; the Bees chased Rainiers starter Francisco Cruceta after only one inning. Bulger has a sexy ERA, and Dallas McPherson took a walk per Mike Scioscia's request:
"He is trying to get a consistent shorter path to the ball," Scioscia said. "His swing is like a lot of power hitters. It is long and it has a lot of holes in it."

McPherson has 48 strikeouts in 99 at-bats this season, but the Angels would live with the higher strikeout numbers if he could balance his production by walking more.

"There has been a walk in his game in the Minor Leagues, but as he progressed that has kind of disappeared," Scioscia said.

Nick Gorneault was a home run short of the cycle.
2006-05-08: Corpus Christi 15, Arkansas 5 #
Bacon: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Wood: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Wilson: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Porter: 2-4
Davidson: (L, 1-3), 5.2 IP, 9 ER, 11 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5.08 ERA
Dan Davidson got shelled as top Astros prospect Hunter Pence went 3-5 with a homer, two doubles and an RBI. Brandon Wood had a good offensive night, as did Dwaine Bacon and Bobby Wilson. Arkansas is 13-17 on the young season with the loss, and in third place in their division.
2006-05-08: Rancho Cucamonga did not play
2006-05-08: Cedar Rapids 4, Dayton 10 #
Statia: 3-4
Renz: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Trumbo: 0-4, 1 K
Mendoza: (L, 1-3), 5.0 IP, 7 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3 HR, 4.10 ERA
Tough night for Tommy Mendoza, who gave up a pair of homers and three runs in the first inning. The offense dragged, too, save for Hainley Statia.
2006-05-08: AZL Angels did not play
2006-05-08: Orem did not play
2006-05-08: Las Vegas 8, Colorado Springs 6 #
Valdez: 1-3, 2 BB
Young, D: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K
Guzman, J: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Loney: 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K
Garcia: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Stults: (W, 3-2), 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 10 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 4.88 ERA
Eric "Not A Prospect" Stults gave up ten hits and three earned runs over five innings to get a very contestable win. It was Delwyn Young's day at the plate, with five RBI's.
2006-05-08: Carolina 1, Jacksonville 9 #
Hu: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Abreu: 2-3, 2 BB
Kemp: 3-5, 1 HR, 5 RBI
LaRoche: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Ruggiano, J: 2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Raglani: 0-4
Ellis: 1-2, 2 BB
Orenduff, J: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 4.31 ERA
Alvarez, C: (W, 3-0) (in relief), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.43 ERA
Justin Ruggiano blasted a pair of solo homers, while two other Suns had multi-hit nights, including Matt Kemp, who hit a grand slam. Justin Orenduff left the game in the second inning after walking two batters; he reported a sore shoulder. The start of the game was delayed almost 90 minutes due to rain, which may have had something to do with it.
2006-05-08: Dunedin 19, Vero Beach 12 #
Nicholson: 2-6, 1 RBI, 3 K
Dewitt: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
Denker, T: 1-4, 1 BB
Dunlap: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Bruce: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Paul, X: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Westervelt: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Hoffmann: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Hammes: (L, 2-1), 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 4.37 ERA
Castillo, A: 3.0 IP, 8 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3 HR, 6.88 ERA
All the crooked numbers: Blue Jay Ryan Patterson went 6-6 with three homers in a slugfest that saw six balls leave the park. Five errors (three by Dunedin, two by Vero including one by Blake Dewitt) helped grease the scoring, too. It took a total of ten pitchers (six for Dunedin, four for Vero) to get out of the game. Nominal shortstop Jimmy Rohan made his first pitching appearance of the year, breaking Aaron Mathews' bid for a 7-7 night.
2006-05-08: Columbus 10, Kannapolis 1 #
De Jesus: 4-6, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Pedroza: 2-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Mitchell: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mooneyham: 3-3, 1 BB
Sutherland: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Apodaca: 2-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Bastardo: (W, 3-1), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 1.39 ERA
Pratt: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.79 ERA
Rodriguez, J: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 8.27 ERA
A scoreless tie through four, Kannapolis posted its only run in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly from Leonardo Acosta. The crucial sixth inning was a comedy of errors, starting with a double by Russell Mitchell, an HBP on Jason Mooneyham, and an attempted Andrew Locke sac bunt. However, third baseman Adam Ricks threw away the ball, and everyone was safe, thus setting up the bases-loaded chaos that ended up with five runs scoring that inning alone. Great game by Ivan De Jesus.
2006-05-08: GCL Dodgers did not play
2006-05-08: Ogden did not play
