Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Bob Cerv LAA b. 1926, played 1961. An All-Star with the 1958 Athletics (and probably one of the "every team's gotta have one" sort), he was an original Angel, grabbed from the Yankees in the expansion draft, as a bat off the bench. He was probably most useful as tradebait when he was sent back to the Yankees as part of a four-player deal that netted the Angels 1B/OF Lee Thomas. Cerv retired after 1962.
George Dockins BRO b. 1917, played 1947, d. 1997-01-22
Tom Gregorio ANA b. 1977, played 2003. Pity a marginal catcher in the Angels system. One of the few major league farm clubs with depth at the position (can you think of anybody else who has two plausible candidates to call up at the position, outside of the Dodgers and Braves?), Gregorio became expendable after his bat made it clear he would never make it in the Show. Traded to Oakland in 2005, he played a season with the River Cats and is now a third-string catcher for Mariners' AA affiliate San Antonio.
Johnny Rutherford BRO b. 1925, played 1952
Reggie Williams LAN,ANA,CAL b. 1966, played 1992, 1995, 1998-1999
12-17: Padres 3, Dodgers 0
I came into this one about in the seventh, and really started paying attention when the Pads had a couple men on base in the eighth. Wouldn't you just know it but Khalil Greene, the Padres' outstanding shortstop who's struggled at the plate this year, turned out to be the hero — and Saito the goat. Well, not much of a goat, considering his prior work. And Dioner Navarro gets a bad bruise on his wrist, as if things weren't going badly enough for the Dodgers, at 12-17 in last place and four games out of first. It's still far too early to give up on the team, but at the same time, we've seen this before.
Roster Notes
- Chris Bootcheck was placed on the 15-day DL; he injured himself running to the brawl in Wednesday's game. Seriously.
- John Lackey should know by Friday whether he will receive a suspension for Wednesday's brawl.
- Darin Erstad had a cortisone shot for his ankle.
- Kelvim Escobar will make his Saturday start, so Jered Weaver's major league debut will be postponed further, probably a good thing. I'd like to see Weaver have some consistency at AAA before getting a callup.
- Juan Rivera will need more workouts before getting a minor league rehab assignment.
- Good omen or bad? Napoli was the third player in Angel history to homer in his first big league at-bat. For the other two Angels who accomplished the feat, Dave Machemer in 1978 against Minnesota and Don Rose in 1972 against Oakland, it was the only home run of their major league careers.
- The IRL won't race at Dodger Stadium. Whew!
- Grady Little does not know when Odalis Perez will return from the Dominican, and it's suggested that Aaron Sele will replace him.
- Ranger rookie 2B Ian Kinsler took batting practice and could shortly begin a rehab stint in extended spring training.
- Milton Bradley is still several days away from returning from his strained oblique.
- Former Dodger Jose Lima got a callup to the Mets and could make a start for the team as early as Saturday.
- Padres pitcher Clay Hensley will have a precautionary MRI following the bat that hit him in the head on yesterday's game. "Maybe I need to get hit in the back of the head of every outing," he said.
- Bill Mueller will also have a precautionary MRI done on his knee after leaving the game early because of soreness.
Sounds appropriate. I've never heard of a player getting suspended simply for a bit of smack-talk (especially when it wasn't directed at an umpire). Nothing Lackey could have said would justify charging the mound as Kendall did.
Kendall is an ass.
