Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Another undistinguished crowd...

Bill Bean LAN b. 1964, played 1989. Yes, the gay one. It would be interesting if somebody of the caliber of (not to mention the name of) Albert Pujols announced he were gay.

Gene Hermanski BRO b. 1920, played 1943, 1946-1951

Trenidad Hubbard LAN b. 1966, played 1998-1999

Dumbass Lawsuit Dep't

Brian Wilson writes me to let me know about this dimwit who didn't get a red handbag that the Angels clearly said was for women only. This year, I guess anyone who wants one can get one. Sheesh.

Angels Pursuing ... Soriano?

The Rev duly notes this Times story that buries the Angels' pursuit of ... Alfonso Soriano? God, I hope that was Stoneman making a funny.

Making 'Em Sweat: Dodgers 9, Astros 6

What does it say about the Dodgers' bullpen that they can turn Brett Tomko's scoreless no-nitter one-hitter into a close game? Eh, whatever, I'll take the win. The guys who needed to get hot got hot as Kent, Furcal, and Garciaparra all belted home runs, two of them — Kent's and Furcal's — with a pair on base. Tim Hamulack and Franquelis Osoria erased both of those by giving up an equal number of runs. Thppt.

Comments:
Re the giveaway suit: sadly, there's probably some merit to the sex discrimination part of it. Courts have held that "ladies' night" specials at bars violate state law, as do club cover charge policies such as "women admitted free." A specific statute was passed (Civ. Code section 51.6) that prohibits charding different prices for services based upon a person's sex.

So, by offering something to women only, they're probably running afoul of state law. Silly it may be, but people are silly.

But there's no merit to the age discrimination part. The state Unruh Civil Rights Act doesn't include age. There's a separate statute prohibiting age discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. And in employment law, age discrimination only applies to people over the age of 40.

The law needs to allow that some kinds of discrimination are good. The notion of complete blindness is a ridiculous.

The Soriano gambit blows my mind. Is Stoneman only comfortable executing trades with the Expos/Nationals organization? And what *is* this organizational fetish for limited, on-base poor, defense-impaired hackers? Soriano makes GA look like Giambi with his patience.

The only way this makes any sense (and then not financial sense, mind you) is if Soriano is traded for Kennedy/Rivera, and he essentially performs the same role here as Rivera performs now. And then we put Kendrick at 2nd, and let hackers be hackers until the philosophy dims.

Actually that wouldn't work...I was thinking Vidro to short, but he's never played a game at short in his career.

It'd probably have to be Cabrera+Rivera in the trade, and we'd need to call Aybar up.

I'm just hoping this is something to keep the newspapers and the "win now" crowd at bat.

"At bat". I meant, at bay.

Your standards are too high. Trenidad Hubbard is not "undistinguished." For crying out loud, he's Trenidad Hubbard!

I do hope you're being facetious, Jon.
