Red Sox Reacquire Doug Mirabelli

Thanks to Bob Timmermann for pointing out that everyone's favorite knuckleball catcher, Doug Mirabelli, has been reacquired by the Red Sox, for catcher Josh Bard and minor league pitcher Cla Meredith (2006 stats), whom I would advise to get a longer first name.

Comments:
Speaking of Cla, which player in MLB had the shortest and longest names?

Longest: William Van Landingham, a starting pitcher for the mid-90's Giants.

Shortest: two-way tie between Ed Hug, who got a walk in his only plate appearance with the 1903 Brooklyn Dodgers, and Ed Ott, a catcher who was with the Angels in 1982 for one year before a torn rotator cuff ended his career.

The above is based on the Lahman database, and does not include players for which no first name is known. There are three such in the database: Budd, Long, and Wood. None of these players had significant careers (10 AB or fewer).

Yeah, that .217 batting average probably looks like a step up given the way the Pads are hitting these days...
