Today's Birthdays

Too much to do today, and I still have a writeup for last night's Angels game to attend to. Will get to all that presently.

Kirk Gibson LAN b. 1957, played 1988-1990. The Irish exile James Joyce is celebrated on Bloomsday, after a character in Ulysses; perhaps Dodger fans can have something like that today. Happy Birthday, Gibby, for giving us perhaps the greatest moment of Dodger glory in my lifetime, albeit one I was not disposed to pay attention to at the time.

Rafael Landestoy LAN b. 1953, played 1977, 1983-1984. An unremarkable but speedy utilityman, he was the PTBNL on the trade that sent Joe Ferguson, one of my favorite catchers of that era, to the Astros. In another bit of trivia, Ferguson had been previously traded to the Cardinals, who flipped him to the Astros — for Larry Dierker and Jerry DaVanon, dad of former Angel and present Diamondback Jeff.

Bobby Gene Smith CAL b. 1934, played 1965

Comments:
The Dodgers reacquired Landestory in 1983 in exchange for John Franco.

Oops.
