The Arguments For Demoting Jered Weaver
Jeff Erickson at Baseball Prospectus ($) details the arguments for moving Jered Weaver to the minors, which may be summarized as follows:
- Who else to send down? Colón won a Cy Young last year, John Lackey is going nowhere, Ervin Santana continues to improve, Kelvim Escobar just signed an extension predicated on his continued starting, and Jeff Weaver has lowered his ERA by 1.25 over his last three starts.
- The Angels could be showcasing Jeff for a trade.
- The Angels could still be thinking about making a run at the division. Only 5.5 games out, this is tempting, but if so, why bring up a clearly-still-broken Erstad, whose presence on the 25-man roster means Dallas McPherson and Chone Figgins will be fighting for at-bats?
- Service time. As Ken Arneson pointed out in the comments previously today, because Jered Weaver came up so early, he could be Super-2 arbitration eligible in 2008, which would cost the Angels plenty.
