2006-05-31: Tacoma 4, Salt Lake 12 #
Willits, R: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Smith, C: 3-5, 1 3B, 2 RBI
Kendrick, H: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Gorneault: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Mathis, J: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Eylward: 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 K
Myers: 0-3, 2 BB
Shell: (W, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.73 ERA
Rouwenhorst: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.00 ERA
If you didn't get a hit in this game, well, what was wrong with you? Cesar Jimenez was the lucky victim, the relatively recent callup to AAA surrendering seven earned runs with ... hold still ... Howie Kendrick batting cleanup. Kendrick's 2-4 day included a walk and pickoff at first by Jimenez, but it didn't matter as he retaliated by driving in a pair. The Bees also greeted old friend Kevin Appier roughly, getting five runs, four earned, off of him in 1.2 IP, along with five hits, a hit batter, and a pair of walks. Appier has a 1-2, 4.54 ERA after this game, and ... well, you don't need me to tell me he's done. He just doesn't know it yet.

Otherwise, a nice game for Steven Shell, whose record improves to 2-2 with a 3.73 ERA. Jonathan Rouwenhorst went two frames and struck out two.

Update 6/1: Appier took a line drive to his belly and still managed to finish the frame. That smarts. Apparently, he was also nibbling at the corners and missing a lot. Sounds familiar.

2006-05-31: Frisco 11, Arkansas 6 #
Wood: 1-4, 3 K
Brown: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Wilson: 0-4, 1 K
Aspito: 4-4, 1 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI
Rodriguez, R: (L, 1-4), 7.0 IP, 7 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 8.78 ERA
Rafael Rodriguez got pounded on (again), giving up a pair of homers and seven earned runs. Jason Aspito went 4-4 with a pair of homers, Dwaine Bacon stole his league-leading 18th base, but Brandon Wood had a silver sombrero.
2006-05-31: Lancaster 1, Rancho Cucamonga 0 #
Rodriguez, S: 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K
Collins: 1-4
Toussaint: 0-3, 1 K
Arredondo: (L, 3-3), 6.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 11 K, 4 BB, 2.00 ERA
Lynch: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.98 ERA
Torres: 0.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.38 ERA
BA's 13th-rated prospect in the Diamondbacks system, starter Greg Smith pitched six scoreless innings with six strikeouts, striking out the side in the first inning; Jose Arredondo returned the favor in the top of the fifth. The Quakes got a rally going in the bottom of the fifth when Patrick Reilly was hit by a pitch, and then Drew Toussaint reached on a throwing error, moving both Reilly and Toussaint into scoring position; neither Abel Nieves, Cody Fuller, nor Ryan Leahy were able to plate either one. Mark Rosen followed Smith with a two-inning, three-strikeout shutdown; Daniel Pohlman picked up the save.
2006-05-31: Cedar Rapids 4, Clinton 2 #
Statia: 3-5, 1 2B
Renz: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Johnson: 0-5, 5 K
Morris: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Marek: (W, 6-1), 8.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.30 ERA
Stephen Marek just missed a four-hit complete game by one out, as Marek held the LumberKings to two runs, both on a homer by K.C. Herren; he retired the next 11 consecutive batters. Hainley Statia and Jordan Renz both had multi-hit nights, and the Kernels benefited from an errant throw from Clinton shortstop Matt Smith that plated two. Marek got into a jam with two men on in the ninth, and was pulled in favor of Richard Aldridge, who got the save.

2006-05-31: Orem did not play
2006-05-31: Sacramento 6, Las Vegas 5 #
Young, D: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
Guzman, J: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Loney: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Weber, J: 2-4
Robles: 1-4, 1 K
Bellorin, E: 2-4
Houlton: (L, 2-5), 5.1 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 6.00 ERA
Miller: 0.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Carrara: 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1.42 ERA
Don't laugh. In a couple months, Houlton could get a callup to the Dodgers. On the other hand, so could Greg Miller, and that would be a good thing, as might callups of Joel Guzman or James Loney. Also, Kelley Wunsch pitched his first game in relief, getting a scoreless inning in with a strikeout, and Gio Carrara gave up a run, but considering how well he's done previously, you can't complain too much.
2006-05-31: Jacksonville 7, Montgomery 2 #
Hu: 0-5
Abreu: 1-5, 2 K
Brazell: 3-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
LaRoche: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Zapp: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Meadows: 5-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Raglani: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Hanrahan: (W, 5-2), 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 10 K, 4 BB, 2 HR, 3.21 ERA
Tydus Meadows, freshly sent down from Las Vegas, made a bid to return after going 5-5 with a homer against the Montgomery Biscuits. Craig Brazell went 3-5 with a homer, and Anthony Raglani also homered in a one-sided slugfest; meantime, Joel Hanrahan left after five with a phenominal ten strikeouts, two earned runs, and only four walks. His last double-digit strikeout game was over two years ago, also with Jacksonville.
2006-05-31: St. Lucie 4, Vero Beach 5 #
Paul, X: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Hoffmann: 0-5, 2 K
Dewitt: 0-5, 1 K
Dunlap: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
Santana: 0-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Denker, T: 2-2, 3 BB
Westervelt: 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
Malone: 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 8 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.61 ERA
Wright: 2.2 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.37 ERA
Akin: (W, 3-3) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.78 ERA
Christopher Malone pitched a very good game; the St. Lucie stymied the Vero Beach offense until the eighth, when Xavier Paul's grand slam tied the game with one swing of the bat. With men on first and second and nobody out in the bottom of the tenth, Mets reliever Carlos Muniz retired the next two batters — and then gave up a walk to Travis Denker, and a walkoff single to catcher Chris Westervelt.
2006-05-31: Columbus 10, Charleston 6 #
De Jesus: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Pedroza: 3-5, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K
Alvarez: (W, 3-5), 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 5 BB, 4.96 ERA
Horlacher: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.71 ERA
Troncoso: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Yankees' low-A affiliate Charleston RiverDogs got a sound beating in this one as starter Edgar Soto surrendered seven runs in a first inning that saw 12 Catfish come to the plate; he left immediately thereafter. Soto plunked two, walked two, and gave up five hits, all singles. Columbus picked up another three insurance runs in the top of the ninth after a fielding error and a single by Ivan De Jesus, and a Sergio Pedroza home run.

Comments:
RE: The Schoenweis deal - what about Tim Bittner? He was part of that, we got Glover, Dun and Bittner, they got Nickle and Scott Schoeneweiss.

I screwed that up. It was Bittner who got the release; Dunn is now a Tampa Bay employee. Corrections made above.

Lancaster beat Rancho on a (successful) double steal attempt with two outs in the 7th. What a way to score the game's only run...what a way to win/lose...

Here's an excerpt from the game summary:

"The run came with two outs in the seventh inning after Quakes starter Jose Arredondo, the league leader in strikeouts, had already fanned 11 batters. Rusty Ryal drew a walk and stole second base. In a costly defensive lapse, neither middle infielder covered second base on the steal. Catcher Ben Johnson’s throw sailed into center field, sending Ryal to third. Javier Brito walked, putting runners at first and third. Brett Butler put on a play in which Brito bluffed towards second base as if to steal, drawing a throw. Brito then stopped an intentionally got caught in a rundown, staying safe just long enough for Ryal to steal home for the only run of the game."

Crazy...

Man, I remember working on that play in Senior League when I was 14, but I don't think I've ever seen it used in a real game. Sweet that it worked. Sucks that it worked against Rancho.
