- Yesterday's little rant about Oakland reached Ken Arneson's eyes, and he responded:
The "[inefficiency]" angle on the MLB draft makes no sense to me. If teams were allowed to trade picks, then there would be opportunities to exploit inefficiencies. But since you're stuck with whatever draft position you end up with, drafting "strategy" is little more than a test to see who can come up with the most accurate sorting algorithm.
- It's once again time for Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet, and unsurprisingly, Howie Kendrick leads the list with his .517 week (15-29). Kendrick has only struck out twice in his last eight games. Brandon Wood places third, and is batting .462 over his last seven games, with three homers. Finally, Jose Arredondo makes up for his lack of makeup by appearing in the "In The Team Photo" section, thanks to an 11 K start last week, and 79 in 54 innings.
- As promised, here's the weekly MILB.com league notebooks:
PCL (Bees)
Last week: 4-3, 33-23 overall, 1st place, Pacific North Division.
Hot: Howie Kendrick (see above), and Joe Saunders, who broke Jered Weaver's just-set scoreless innings mark at Salt Lake with a 31.1 IP stretch.
Cold: Darin Erstad, with just one hit in nine at bats (at their press time).PCL (51's)
Last week: 3-4, 31-26 overall, slipping into 2nd place in the Pacific South Division.
Hot: Jeff Duncan (.387 last nine games, w/ a homer), Delwyn Young (.308 w/ 2 HR, 10 RBI) William Juarez (CG 4-hitter).
Cold: Chad Billingsley, 1-3, 6.61 ERA in May.Texas League (Travs)
Last week: 2-5, 20-37 overall, 4th (last) place, North Division. Still the worst record in the Texas League, but the team broke a seven-game losing streak this week, and ended it with a pair of wins.
Hot: Brandon Wood (9-22, 3 HR); Matt Brown (9 RBIs).
Not Sucking Quite So Badly: The starting rotation posted a quality start last week; unfortunately, it was off the arm of new callup Nick Green, who may be a little raw for this level. Hey, we take our joy where we can find it.
Cold: Dwayne Bacon.Southern League (Suns)
Last week: 5-1, 37-20 overall, 1st place, South Division.
Hot: Tydus Meadows (.438, 2 HR, 4 RBI); Tony Abreu; non-prospect Spike Lundberg (K'd nine batters last week in a single game).
Cold: Anthony Raglani.Cal League (Quakes)
Last week: 4-3, 30-28 overall, moving up to 2nd place, South Division.
Hot: Amalio Diaz; Micah Posey, who finally got his first win after nine tries.
Cold: No nominees.Florida State League (Dodgers)
Last week: 3-2, 22-34 overall, 6th (last) place, East Division.
Hot: Xavier Paul, Julio Cesar Pimentel, Scott Elbert.
Cold: Cory Dunlap, Carlos SantanaMidwest League (Kernels)
Last week: 4-2, 27-29 overall, 6th place, South Division.
Hot: Hainley Statia (11-34), Dallas Morris (6-18, 2 HR), Stephen Marek (one out from a complete game) .
Cold: Larry InfanteSouth Atlantic League (Catfish)
Last week: 3-4, 31-27 overall, tied for 3rd place with Greenville in the Southern Division.
Hot: Reserve catcher Tony Harper (20 game hitting streak)
Cold: Lucas May (.224)

Bulger: (H, 2), 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.01 ERA
"Bees Win In Relief Of Colon" reads the execrable headline at MILB.com, with not a word about Colón's velocity; my guess based on tonight's results is that it's still pretty far down, which can only lead to further nailbiting about how he'll fare once he returns to the big club, and who gets knocked back down to the minor league level to make room for the Angels' Cy Young winner. Those results included a home run surrendered to the junk drawer filling that Paul DePodesta acquired, Jose Flores, and a triple to Dan Ortmeier followed up by an RBI groundout. Only two strikeouts, though, Bart?

Jason Bulger relieved Matt Wilhite, and got the Bees out of a second and third, one-out scenario without any runs scoring. Greg Jones collected his fifth save of the year.
Dallas McPherson Alert: Howie Kendrick returned to second base; he's played third base three times since returning to Salt Lake.

Rodriguez, R: (W, 2-4), 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 5 BB, 2 HR, 8.60 ERA
Wow, another win. Rafael Rodriguez didn't pitch terribly effectively, but the day-long thunderstorms that cancelled batting practice didn't seem to have any effect on the Travs' power. Aaron Peel and Matt Brown both homered, and Brandon Wood went 2-5 with a pair of doubles. Rich Thompson pitched three effective innings, giving up only one earned run on three hits and a walk; Miguel Gonzalez got the save, his second.

Miller: (H, 2), 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
Izturis had a multi-hit night in the leadoff spot and James Loney homered in the win. Harold Eckert tried mightily to give up a four-run lead in the sixth inning, but was prevented by a fine performance by Greg Miller, who inherited a man on third and one out. That man (John Baker) scored, but Eric Hull and Lance Carter (who now has a 0.71 ERA in 12.1 IP) made it stand up. The win concluded a four-game sweep of the River Cats in Sacramento, payback for a sweep of Las Vegas at home earlier in the year.

Comments:
I'm on record as being skeptical of Bart's health and whether he'll be able to contribute this year.
If he needs something fixed, he should have it fixed now and hopefully be back by the beginning of 2007.
He had 3+ months to heal from October to the WBC. If that didn't do it, I don't see how another six weeks will do it, and his results thus far seem to indicate that he hasn't progressed.
Re: Arredondo, I want to see this kid pitch someday; and Adenhart when he makes it up to Rancho.
