- The Angels and the Orem Owls have extended their contract through 2010.
- Chad Billingsley says he learned a lot by just observing baseball cards:
“I learned how to throw most of my pitches by looking at the cards of Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. I got the motion to throw the knuckle curve and the grip to throw a changeup and curveball,” Billingsley said. “You’d be surprised how much you could learn just by looking at baseball cards.”
On former roomie Edwin Jackson:“Edwin’s a great guy, but he just couldn’t find his rhythm. A lot of this game is mental and it gets tough if your head isn’t on straight. He lost his confidence. I think he was listening to too many people and trying to be everything to everybody,” Billingsley said of Jackson, who was traded to the Devil Rays in the offseason. “You can’t get caught up in all the expectations.

Bulger: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 4.78 ERA
The Bees broke a 5-5 tie in the tenth with a two-run Jeff Mathis ground rule double that scored Howie Kendrick. Kendrick's now hitting .413 and I think I may swoon just reading that. Jeff Heaverlo didn't pitch terribly; Jason Bulger walked the bases loaded to open the bottom half of the 10th, and two of those guys scored on a Chris Carter single.

Wood: 0-3, 2 K
Wilson: 0-3
Green: (L, 1-1), 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 9 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.97 ERA
Brandon Wood's 13-game hitting streak came to a close as the Drillers shut down the Travs behind Ubaldo Jimenez, the current Texas League Pitcher of the Week. Jimenez three-hit the Travs in a nine-inning complete game, retiring 12 straight batters at one point, five on consecutive strikeouts. This was his third victory against Arkansas this year.

I was a bit worried that Nick Green was over his head pitching at AA so early, and especially considering he's barely mastered life at Rancho. This game provides no evidence to the contrary. But, at least Ty Boykin left Dwaine Bacon out of the leadoff spot.

19-year-old Amalio Diaz pitched another good game and still has yet to surrender an earned run in 11.2 IP for the Quakes. Homers from Drew Toussaint and Sean Rodriguez provided all the offense Rancho would need.

More importantly, another strong game by Nick Adenhart. Still. Not. At. Rancho. Dammit. Robert Romero loaded the bases in the ninth and all three baserunners scored when Richard Aldridge allowed them to score on a wild pitch and a bases-clearing RBI double.

If the Angels can't beat the M's, at least the Dodgers' minor leaguers can... or something. Lots of good offensive outings here (Loney and Delwyn Young come to mind), not so much on the pitching (blowups from Gio Carrara and Kelly Wunsch). The 51's escaped a four-run ninth to record the win. Whew.

The Cardinals blew this game open almost the minute Julio Pimentel came into it. Nursing a 1-0 lead into the eighth, Pimentel struck out Sean Danielson, but then Juan Lucena reached on a David Nicholson fielding error. It went south from there for the Dodgers, who gave up the game winning run shortly thereafter in an embarrassing five-run collapse.

If 22-year-old Marlon Arias keeps throwing games like this one, he might well become a real prospect. Good to see Columbus, having a pretty mediocre-to-bad season, get a win over division powerhouse Rome.

Comments:
I was at tonight's SLC-Tucson game, sitting front row behind first base. Erstad looked horrible and completely unmotivated. He never hit a ball that left the infield. I believe he is now hitting under .100 for the Bees. Could be awhile (if ever) before we see him in Halo red, and that seems to be a good thing.
On the other hand, Kendrick is just an amazing hitter. The guy hits the ball all over the place. His one bad at-bat was a strikeout where he looked overmatched by one of the Tucson relievers.
Bulger gets the blame of the game. I don't understand why he was left in the game for the 10th, even after walking the bases loaded with no outs. He looked pretty shaken up and yet still they left him in. No one even got up in the bullpen.
Props to Chris Carter. Sure, he hit a homerun and all early in the game. He handed my 2-year old son a game ball between innings, which he is now sleeping with.
