Minor League Scorebook
News
- It always amazes me how little attention player movement is given in the minor leagues, but perhaps this is because the teams want it this way; press releases cost money! Thus I find it surprising that the Travs have taken Bob Zimmerman off the DL and moved Michel Simard down to Rancho. I didn't even know Zimmerman was on the DL...
- A couple guys on the Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet:
4. Brandon Wood, ss, Angels (Double-A Arkansas)
In the "In the team photo" section:
It's not last year, but it's impressive nonetheless. Last week, Wood hit two bombs to go along with a .321 average and drove in five. On the season, the 21-year-old shortstop is hitting .288/.365/.567 with 14 homers and 23 doubles in 240 at-bats.Howie Kendrick, 2b, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): Just keeps hitting. And pushing Kevin Kouzmanoff for the overall lead in batting with a .407 average.
The Not-So-Hot Sheet:...
Andy LaRoche, 3b, Dodgers (Double-A Jacksonville): No protection from Matt Kemp in the Jacksonville lineup? No problem. LaRoche batted .429 last week and added a pair of homers.
Rafael Rodriguez, rhp, Angels (Double-A Arkansas)
Hopefully Rodriguez doesn't hit double-digits for times being mentioned on this part of the list, but it's not looking good. Over his last two starts, Rodriguez allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits in 11 innings. He's now 2-5, 8.53 since being promoted to Double-A, with a 33-26 K-BB ratio in 51 innings. - No Angels or Dodgers prospects made the Offensive Player of the Week list; perhaps that's because Kevin Kouzmanoff has the overall minor league lead for batting average, so maybe Howie Kendrick's not quite there yet.
- Joel Hanrahan at Jacksonville and Cory Wade at Columbus made Pitcher of the Week for their respective leagues (Southern and Sally, in order).
- The California League All-Star rosters have been announced; Quakes starter Jose Arredondo, who leads the league in strikeouts, catcher Michael Collins, and shortstop Sean Rodriguez will be on the team.
- As always, the weekly notebooks:
PCL (Bees)

That Didn't Go So Well Dep't: Bartolo Colón got blasted, giving up six earned runs and three homers. Despite it, the Angels have all but handed Jered Weaver his return ticket to Salt Lake following his start tomorrow. Howie Kendrick still — barely — has a batting average over .400 (.401) following today's game, but at least he keeps his hit streak alive, with 10 consecutive games. Jeff Mathis and Nick Gorneault both had good games with the bat, as did Adam Pavkovich.

With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth, Kevin Lynch walked the bases loaded and then uncorked a wild pitch to give up the walkoff run. Blecch. Some good offensive performances by Sean Rodriguez, Freddy Sandoval, and Drew Toussaint were squandered in the loss.

Statia: 0-2, 2 BB
Martinez: 1-2, 2 BB

Infante: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Mendoza: (W, 4-5), 9.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 5.11 ERA
That's why they paid Trumbo the big bucks: Trumbo's solo homer and dramatic ninth-inning groundout provided two of the team's runs; Larry Infante had a two-run jack that decided the game as part of a three-run ninth that turned around a game in which the Kernels hadn't led — until the end. Tommy Mendoza provided another fine game, tossing a complete game in nine frames.

Deuces are wild, as Vinny might say; the 51's scored two runs in five innings, four of them consecutive from the fourth through the seventh. Three homers from Andy LaRoche, Jon Weber, and James Loney helped out. Another strong relief performance from Greg MIller, who has yet to give up an earned run in 10.2 IP.

Comments:
Just got back from the 51s game tonight and the guy to watch out for is the 2002 first round Dodger pick Greg Miller, who pitched two perfect innings of relief. I really liked how he plowed through those six hitters, too, because he managed a few strike outs through sheer high heat, through movement, with the change up, and he induced a few tame ground outs.
Checking out his numbers from rookie ball to Double-A, he seems to have destroyed the lower minors. His WHIP hovering around 1.00, his ERA at 2.20, about 9 strikeouts per 9 innings, and more than 200 strikeouts with less than 90 walks. His numbers so far in Las Vegas are a little more pedestrian, but he's 21 years old, he looked unstoppable tonight against AAA bats.
He may not be ready for Chavez Ravine THIS year, but Greg Miller should definately be in the mix for the Dodger bullpen eventually.
