More Draft Coverage
- The Rev wrote me to let me know that the Dodgers' top draft pick, LHP Clayton Kershaw, was born on March 19, 1988, only a few days after as the infamous eyeblack episode that caused Kirk Gibson to launch into his tirade about being serious.
The Dodgers got Kershaw with their first pick, seventh overall; he was the top prep arm in the draft according to some. They took RHP Bryan Morris with their second first-round pick, 26th overall; from Nate Purcell in the Dodger Thoughts draft day thread, "The Devil Rays goofed up with Morris and should have gotten him signed. He profiles as a true power pitcher and being from Tennessee, he reminds me a lot of Matt Cain of the Giants." The Dodgers' final first-round pick, 31st overall, was a surprise, high school SS Preston Mattingly, son of the former Yankee great, and a surprise to fall to the Dodgers. (The Yanks could have had him with the 21st pick, but took USC pitcher Ian Kennedy instead.)
I wonder how much Rafael Furcal's injury issues are weighing on the Dodgers? They also picked a shortstop with their fourth pick (in the fourth round, 113th overall), Kyle Orr.
- The Angels surprised me by taking a high school catcher and a local product, Hyun Choi Conger, with their only first-round pick. The Angels have taken a pair of outfielders, unsurprisingly, with their third- and fourth-round picks, Russell Moldenhauer and Clayton Fuller, both out of Texas.
- Long Beach State's 3B Evan Longoria went third overall to the Devil Rays. I'm so sorry, Evan.
