Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Darin Erstad ANA,LAA,CAL b. 1974, played 1996-2005, All-Star: 1998, 2000. I've never been a fan, but that's because I only saw him briefly before he started to stink it up at far too many dollars per year. In his prime, the best centerfielder in baseball and a lethal bat. Then, the best defensive centerfielder in baseball — when he could stay on the field. Then, the best defensive first baseman in baseball. Then, Mr. DL. Almost certainly gone after this year, in my mind he remains the poster boy for Bill Stoneman's apparent willingness to do deals based on auld lang syne while not accounting for age-related decline.

Doug Griffin CAL b. 1947, played 1970

Lee Magee BRO b. 1889, played 1919, d. 1966-03-14

Kurt Stillwell CAL b. 1965, played 1993, All-Star: 1988. Stillwell came up with Barry Larkin in the Reds system, and was actually a year younger, believe it or not; the Reds made the right choice in keeping Larkin and trading Stillwell to the Royals, though neither of the players they did get for him, starter Danny Jackson and Angel Salazar, lasted very long or were good; Jackson was with the team for three years, and Salazar was released before the season started. By the time the Angels got Stillwell, his career was almost over (he had a two-year gap following his Angels stint that I can't explain); he retired after his 1996 season with the Rangers.

George Watkins BRO b. 1900, played 1936, d. 1970-06-01

Rick Wilkins LAN b. 1967, played 1999

Roster Notes

Mentos+Coke = Fun!

This is pretty silly.

Comments:
Danny Jackson would have won the Cy Young award for Cincy in 1988 had it not been for Orel Hershiser's 57 consecutive scoreless innings. Over the entire season, Jackson was probably better (23-8, 2.73, 15 CG, 6 SHO, 260 2/3 IP, 1.06 WHIP) for a second-place team.

And he was a key contributor to the Reds' 1990 World Series title.

I should have made it clear that I meant "lasted long with their club", not so much as an indication of their quality as a "what did you get out of this trade".
