Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Jack Banta BRO b. 1925, played 1947-1950
Charlie Dees CAL,LAA b. 1935, played 1963-1965
Don Mincher CAL b. 1938, played 1967-1968, All-Star: 1967, 1969. If you hit 23 home runs in 1964, you were a stud, though his accomplishment was certainly overshadowed by teammate Harmon Killebrew and his 49 that year. Mincher was one of the returns on the trade that sent Top 100 Angel Dean Chance to the Twins. It almost worked out about even-Steven, because the Twins got three good years out of Chance, and the Angels got a couple out of Mincher. One of five Twins to homer in a single inning in a record-setting June 6, 1966 game against the Kansas City A's, he also homered in his first World Series at-bat against Don Drysdale, but had a terrible series otherwise, hitting only .130. He got beaned in mid-season 1968, and never hit as well afterwards. The Angels left him unprotected in the 1968 expansion draft, and the Seattle Pilots snapped him up. He bounced back again, hitting 25 homers the next year. Oakland got him after that, and they traded him twice over the next three years before he retired in 1972.
Jason Romano LAN b. 1979, played 2003
Roster Notes
- Darin Erstad went back on the DL with ankle problems; the Angels called up Tommy Murphy from Salt Lake to replace him on the 25-man.
- Bill Mueller is probably done. The specialist he visited in Veil, CO, had no answer to the degenerative condition in his right knee.
