Minor League Scorebook

2006-07-01: Salt Lake 8, Sacramento 5 #
Willits, R: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Pride: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Kendrick, H: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Eylward: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Mathis, J: 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Saunders: (W, 10-3), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 2.37 ERA
Joe Saunders motors skillfully on and even posts some good strikeout numbers to add to his impressive totals. I'm quite sure he's paying close attention to Bartolo Colón's shoulder these days, and if tonight's game was any indication, he's making a strong case to get a callup in the eventuality — inevitability? — that Bart goes back down.
2006-07-01: Tulsa 6, Arkansas 4 #
Wood: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Hunter: (L, 2-8), 3.1 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 7.14 ERA
A seven-inning game that formed the first half of a double-header, Brandon Wood failed to strike out. Let me illustrate just how rare that has been this year:
Graph: Brandon Wood strikeouts per at-bat
He goes through periods where he's better, and then he gets worse, and then... well, he's hovering at around 33% or so, which is even higher than Dallas McPherson at AA. It's a huge jump.
2006-07-01: Tulsa 3, Arkansas 9 #
Peel, A: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wood: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Brown: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Porter: 4-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Wilson: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, R: (W, 3-5), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 7.62 ERA
Greg Porter homered twice, and Brandon Wood and Aaron Peel got a tater apiece as the Travs walloped the Drillers. Rafael Rodriguez looks like he might be settling down, collecting his second consecutive quality start and his first win since June 6. Miguel Gonzalez recorded the last three outs of the game.
2006-07-01: Inland Empire 5, Rancho Cucamonga 6 #
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Toussaint: 1-2
Collins: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 K
Lopez: 0-4, 2 K
Sutton: 2-3, 1 3B
Rodriguez, F: (W, 7-4), 7.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 12 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.58 ERA
Jepsen: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.76 ERA
Fernando Rodriguez posted a quality start, going into the eighth. Rancho scored most of their runs in a wild seventh inning, with a throwing error, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and Sean Rodriguez's two-run homer all contributing to the total; none of Rancho's runs in that inning were earned as a result. Baltazar Lopez botched a rundown that allowed J.B. Tucker III to reach second and Jack Arroyo to score (the log doesn't mention it, but that's what had to have happened).
2006-07-01: Dayton 2, Cedar Rapids 7 #
Coon: 2-5, 1 K
Statia: 4-5, 1 2B
Renz: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Martinez: 1-2, 2 BB
Mendoza: (W, 5-5), 8.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.32 ERA
Tommy Mendoza's 5-5 line belies his 12th quality start this year, this game being his fourth consecutive. It was also his fourth win in his last eight starts. Mendoza has pitched seven or more complete innings in seven of his starts so far this year, all of which is to say he's having a solid year so far despite middling peripherals.

Hainley Statia's had a terrific night at the plate, going 4-5; so did Jordan Renz, who drove in five on a two-run homer and a bases-clearing double.

One Cedar Rapids news item that I didn't want to post at the top: the Cedar Rapids Bunnies? File that one under Team Names Best Forgotten.

2006-07-01: Idaho Falls 1, Orem 2 #
Phillips: 0-4
Knazek: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Mount: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Bourjos: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Diaz: 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1.29 ERA
Browning: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 5.06 ERA
I think that Diaz kid isn't too bad, yeah? Ryan Mount and Peter Bourjos drove in the only runs for Orem, Bourjos providing a walkoff RBI single in the ninth.
2006-07-01: AZL Athletics 2, AZL Angels 8 #
Fuller: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Sweeney: 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Conger: 4-5
Ryan: 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Veras: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 2.00 ERA
Herrera: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Some day, Hank Conger will get a day behind the dish, but for today, they used Anel De Los Santos. Conger's batting cleanup these days, and even scored a run. This Matt Ryan dude's on a small-sample-sized hot streak, batting .500 after only two games. Vladimir Veras also had a nice little game for himself, and look at all those K's. It was his second start for the Angels.
2006-07-01: Tucson 13, Las Vegas 3 #
Aybar: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Loney: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 K
Guzman: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
Riggs: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Young, D: 2-4, 1 K
Bellorin, E: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Robles: 1-1
Lundberg: (L, 0-4), 5.1 IP, 8 R, 7 ER, 13 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 7.17 ERA
Miller: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 4.15 ERA
Osoria: 0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 5.09 ERA
Willie Aybar homered, James Loney continued his late hot streak, and Delwyn Young and Edwin Bellorin both had multi-hit nights. That was the good news, but the bad news was the near-total dismantling of starter Spike Lundberg by the Sidewinders; Alberto Callaspo's leadoff triple in the first set the tone for the game. Franquelis Osoria gave up a pair of runs while only recording two outs, walking two, giving up three hits, and allowing all his inherited baserunners to score. Eek. If he keeps this up through the end of the season, I may take him off my watchlist.
2006-07-01: Jacksonville 2, Chattanooga 5 #
Abreu: 1-3, 1 BB
Ruan: 2-4, 1 3B
Hu: 0-4, 1 K
Totten: (L, 7-4), 6.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 3.39 ERA
Kozlowski: 1.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1.46 ERA
Heath Totten pitched well but got no run support as Edward Valdez shut down the Suns' offense.
2006-07-01: Vero Beach 2, St. Lucie 10 #
Paul, X: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Dewitt: 0-4, 1 K
Raglani: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Dunlap: 0-2, 2 BB
Hoffmann: 0-3, 2 K
Malone: (L, 2-5), 6.1 IP, 10 R, 5 ER, 10 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 5.79 ERA
Hammes: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.91 ERA
Two years ago, Zach Hammes was BA's 30th-ranked prospect in the Dodgers system, but his stock has fallen as much as his competitors in the system have outshined him. Christopher Malone, one of those now outranking him in BA's latest system appraisal, is having one tough season so far, and this game was an example of why. Even removing the five unearned runs from his record — thanks to five errors, two each by 3B Carlos Santana and Blake Dewitt, and a fifth by Cory Dunlap — Malone still surrendered five runs over six and a third, while striking out only three.

Xavier Paul's two-run homer was the only highlight of this abysmal game for the Dodgers, who lost their fourth straight.

2006-07-01: Savannah 1, Columbus 2 #
De Jesus: 2-3
Denker, T: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K
Wade: (W, 5-3), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 4.46 ERA
Meloan: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.52 ERA
2006-07-01: Columbus 2, Savannah 0 #
De Jesus: 1-4
Denker, T: 0-3, 2 K
Pedroza: 2-3, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Hunt: 2-2, 1 BB
Castillo: (W, 5-1), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.13 ERA
Gomez de Segura: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 5.68 ERA
They played one at Columbus, got on the bus to Savannah, and played one there, too. The Catfish swept, in this game because of Sergio Pedroza's RBI triple in the third, the only scoring either side would do. Both games were completed in seven innings.
2006-07-01: Casper 6, Ogden 7 #
Rivera, J: 2-5, 1 3B, 1 K
Berezay: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Bell: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Medero-Stullz: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Brown: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wall: 5.0 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 1.62 ERA
Jones: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 7.50 ERA
Eduardo Perez's walkoff two-outs RBI single sent Ogden over the top. Josh Wall lasted five innings, but only two of his runs were earned thanks to three errors by Ogden defense.
2006-07-01: GCL Dodgers 3, GCL Nationals 1 (Completed Early: Other) #
Carter, R: 0-2, 2 BB
Garcia: 2-3, 1 RBI
Mattingly: 1-4, 1 RBI
Lopez: 2-4
Smit: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
Paris: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 2.70 ERA
This appears to have been the first half of a doubleheader, with Kyle Smit being used as the bass-ackwards end of a tandem start.
2006-07-01: GCL Dodgers vs. GCL Nationals: Missing report #
Still not available as of press time, so I'll get to try again tomorrow.

Comments:
Conger caught on Friday, allowing a SB but also picking off a runner.

Here's another impressive Tommy Mendoza stat: He's 18 years old! (8/18/87) In a league where most players are about 21 years old, what he's doing is impressive. According to some quick and dirty research, he appears to be the fifth youngest player in the league. Here's how the other four are doing:

Justin Upton (name rings a bell...or was that a cash register?) born 8/25/87 is batting .278. He's hanging in there.

Omar Poveda, born 9/28/87 is only 1-9, but has 87 K's in 81 innings, against only 16 walks.

The other two players, Jesus Lopez and Allan De San Miguel, are batting .215 and .198 respectively.
