Minor League Scorebook
News
A long one today...- Tim Mead wrote me today that Gustavo Espinoza is on a throwing program, and may return by mid-August.
- From Mike Emeigh we learn that James Holcomb was placed on the DL at Arkansas. Also:
Columbus (SAL) sent C Juan Apodaca and P John Meloan to Vero Beach, received Ps Nate Hochgesang and Giuseppe Norrito from Odgen, signed C Conor McGeehan (NDFA, Northern Kentucky).
- The Angels activated Steven Shell off the DL at AAA Salt Lake.
- Vero Beach released C Chris Westervelt. As Emeigh says, there probably won't be a lot of player movement until later in the week, after the AAA and major league All-Star break.
- Here's something you won't see every day: last Saturday, the scheduled AZL game between the Giants and Royals was postponed due to tragedy. It turns out the tragedy was the death of Lynn Stanley, wife of Fred Stanley, and a number of coaches, not just on the Giants staff, wanted to attend. (Fred at one time managed the Giants' AAA club.) You can do that in the AZL.
- Some Travelerocity updates: The vote on the Wranglers' new stadium in Springdale, Arkansas is coming up, and if Springdale goes for it, the Wranglers are out ...
- Howie Kendrick's Futures Game hat was a size too big.
- With the addition of Terry Evans at Arkansas, everyone's wondering who ends up getting demoted or cut; the obvious candidates are pitchers rather than position players, but former Razorback Devin Day might be the first man sent elsewheresville, or if not him, one of the bad pair of Bob Zimmermann or Chris Hunter. So far, the answer has been putting James Holcomb on the DL and replacing him with Chris Hunter, thus temporarily pasting over the problem.
- Jose Arredondo and James Loney appear on this week's Prospect Hot Sheet:
2. Jose Arredondo, rhp, Angels (Double-A Arkansas)
In the Team Photo:
It took just 68 at-bats in 2004 for the Angels to realize that Arredondo was not a shortstop, but a pitcher. It looks like a good decision, as Arredondo is now just one strikeout behind Yovani Gallardo for the minor league lead. Promoted to Double-A last Wednesday, Arredondo tossed a complete game shutout in his debut. The righthander has struck out at least seven batters in all but two of his starts on the season.6. James Loney, 1b, Dodgers (Triple-A Las Vegas)
Loney was at it again last week, going 12-for-28 (.429) to bring his season mark to a PCL-best .385. The power has started to come for the 22-year-old Loney, too, as his .556 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the league.Hainley Statia, ss, Angels (Low Class A Cedar Rapids): After a slow June, Statia is 18-for-32 in July with more walks then strikeouts. Is five-for-his-last-six in stolen bases too, though 9-for-20 before that.
- Here's a couple notes from Kevin Goldstein's Future Shock:
Scott Elbert, lhp, Double-A Jacksonville (Dodgers)
Quick rule of thumb: If somebody can get it done at Double-A before he is 21, watch out. In 17 Florida State League starts, Elbert had a 2.37 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 83.2 innings and just 57 hits allowed. Bumped up to the Southern League over the weekend, Elbert dominated in his Jacksonville debut, striking out nine over five innings while giving up one hit, a home run. While he turns 21 in August, his rise from Double-A to the majors might take a little longer than Chad Billingsley. His raw stuff is very good, but he's a little rough around the edges, struggling with control at times and still refining his changeup. Nonetheless, yet another young pitching stud in the Dodgers organization.
Preston Mattingly, ss, Rookie-level GCL Dodgers
Eyebrows were raised when the Dodgers selected Mattingly with the 31st overall pick in June. As it turns out, Mattingly had a impressive late charge in the season, drawing more (and more important) scouts to his games in Indiana, with a number of teams that thought they had a chance to grab him in the fourth-to-sixth rounds suddenly considering him with their supplemental picks. Currently riding an eight-game hitting streak in which he's gone 19-for-50, Matting is batting .367/.400/.449 overall in 13 games. Preston has very little in common with his father--he swings from the right size, he's much larger (6-foot-3, 205 pounds), and a significantly better athlete, though few believe he can stay at shortstop. The one thing he does have in common so far, however, is the most important thing: he can hit.
- No Angel or Dodger prospect was named an Offensive Player of the Week.
- Jose Arredondo of the Travs made Pitcher of the Week; no Dodger prospects were mentioned.
- I may do breakdowns of the league notebooks in the future, but it's just too much effort, as you can tell by the fact that I missed them completely last week. For now, here goes with just the links, again: PCL (51's, Bees), Texas League (Travs); for now, I'm going to stop there because I want to get this post out the door, and the MILB.com website just isn't cooperating. Update: Southern League (Suns), Cal League (Quakes), Florida State League (Vero Beach Dodgers), Midwest League (Kernels), Sally League (Catfish), and finally, the Pioneer League (Owlz, Raptors), which has a weekly notebook for the first time that I know of.
Scores
An abbreviated list because of the All-Star break.
Wood: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Evans: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Wilson: 0-4, 1 K
Pali: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Arredondo: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 1.93 ERA
Zimmermann: (W, 1-2) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 7.04 ERA
Terry Evans provided the Travs with yet another homer, as did Nathan Haynes and Matt Pali in this slugfest. Jose Arredondo was three outs away from a quality start, and the much-reviled Bob Zimmermann even contributed three scoreless innings.
Rodriguez, S: 2-5, 3 K
Collins: 1-5, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Rodriguez: 6.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 5.69 ERA
Beck: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.08 ERA
Francisco Rodriguez had a pretty good outing despite all the hits, but Brad Beck, in his second stab at Rancho this year, gave up the game-winner.
Wipke: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Renz: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Trumbo: 2-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Mosebach: (W, 6-4), 6.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.34 ERA
Didjurgis: (H, 8), 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.00 ERA
Aldridge: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.10 ERA
Despite an unimpressive line for Bobby Mosebach, the Kernels won. Very good night for Richard Aldridge, and Mark Trumbo, too, who got on base every single time. Flint Wipke homered, too.
Knazek: 1-3, 2 BB
Pettit: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Phillips: 0-3, 1 BB
Rivera: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Shankle: 0-2, 2 BB
Herndon: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.91 ERA
Arredondo: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 0.64 ERA
Christopher Pettit drove in the winning run on a walkoff RBI single. Felipe Arredondo got the win in relief.
Ortiz: 3-4, 1 RBI
Moore: 2-3
Schoeninger: (W, 2-0), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 8 K, 0 BB, 1.40 ERA
Timothy Shoeninger collects his first quality start, though that might be a little misleading; he's only given up three earned runs over 19.1 IP. Shortstop Wilberto Ortiz had his second consecutive multi-hit game, and Christopher Lewis drove in a pair.
Bruce: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Dunlap: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
Paul, X: 1-3
Hoffmann: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Bastardo: (L, 2-5), 4.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 0 K, 4 BB, 4.21 ERA
Pimentel: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.70 ERA
Alberto Bastardo has had decisions in only seven of his 16 starts, and five of those were losses; he hasn't had a win since June 14, and he hasn't won as a starter since May 13. It's hard to win when you're giving up runs like this.
Denker, T: 3-3, 1 BB
Pfeiffer: (L, 1-3), 6.0 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 4.69 ERA
Castillo: 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.51 ERA
Payback. Nice line for Travis Denker, though.
Arismendy Castillo gave up a grand slam to Eric Campbell and then managed to load up the bases again on a hit batter, a wild pitch strikeout, and a single into short center; a GIDP off the bat of Jamie Romak got him out of the inning, but man, what a mess.
Rivera, J: 1-3, 1 K
Bell: 0-4, 2 K
Jensen: 3-3, 1 BB
Giles: 2-4, 1 RBI
Morris: 4.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 3.00 ERA
Rodriguez, J: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.54 ERA
Bryan Morris and three relievers five-hit Helena; Miguel Ramirez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save. Chris Jensen went 3-3 and scored a pair of runs.
Lizarraga: 2-3, 1 2B
Kershaw: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.29 ERA
Haldis: (W, 2-1) (in relief), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 2.05 ERA
